Do you think Elizabeth Warren is available?

The New York Times got its hands on a big chunk of Trump's tax returns. Apparently he's up to his hair plugs not just in legally questionable deductions and other things that may wind up constituting prosecutable fraud, but also in debt. Lots and lots of debt. Much of it coming due in the near future.

So the gist seems to be that the Trump clan have made a career put of buying/setting up businesses, having those businesses finance their lifestyle, then moving on leaving those companies with massive debts to creditors once they are no longer useful.

This needs it's own thread, but it was originally buried in the election thread (where it doesn't belong) and @tafkats thread title, while funny, doesn't adequately draw attention to the topic because it's too vague.

There's no way anyone could've known this, but is there anyone here that did not seriously suspect that this was the case?

Suspect that there was dodgy or embarassing stuff in his taxes? Sure. He fought too hard and too long against any form of release.

But suspect that he literally paid no federal income taxes for most years in over a decade and only paid $1500 that we know? That he has anywhere near the level of red ink that he is declaring because he was so bad at business?

It is a Catch-22, assuming the NYT's reporting on this is generally accurate. (Which I do -- because Trump could easily disprove what his tax returns show if he wanted).

Either Trump is beyond incompetent as a businessman, in which case he has no place running our country.

Or he actually is as skilled a businessman as he would have us believe and he's committed years of fraud to get out of paying taxes, in which case he has no place running our country.

I posted something recently that he's using the "owing money to myself for buying out a loan" trick to pay no tax on at least one of his properties (this is legal as long as you did actually buy back the loan and you pay the LLC you set up to do so... but Trump hasn't paid a dime into that company in 15 years)

Looks like he's done something similar here too - "paying" for Ivanka as a consultant and claiming it as a deductable.

It would be helpful to know how the NY Times got these documents and how we can be sure they're real.

Not that it will matter. If one is not already convinced that Trump is a conman, a crook, a liar, and not a patriot, this isn't going to break the camel's back.

I saw speculation that it came from Michael Cohen, based on the notion that the years coincide with Cohen's stint as Trump's attorney and the release coincides with the Jewish Day of Atonement. (Although that last point, it seems to me that the Times must have had these figures for a while since it would take a while to analyze them and to attempt all the legal bulletproofing that they no doubt would have done.)

Trump has had financial issues since the 90s. If the banks had done their jobs then ie: treat him the same way any of us would have been treated, he would have had everything taken away and would be nothing more than a guy trying to hok autographs for bucks. Instead they took over his businesses and paid him a large fee for use of the Trump name. Pretty big slap on the wrist if you ask me

But you have to understand - he has "people" to take care of those things. His response to all of this will be the same as it's always been: "I take no responsibility at all."
