I liked this episode a lot and I was very skeptical at first. Here's why it worked for me, they made it connect to I'm guessing quantum theory or string theory, I'm not sure which one. I'm also not sure if they're not one and in the same. They finally let Spock do his thing and do science stuff. I love it when Star Trek takes real life science concepts and adapts them to fit the story. I mean Star Trek does this all of the time, but I'm specifically talking about theoretical physics like a Dyson's Sphere for example. I've never heard of an improbability field though. I guess that's why I liked "Among the Lotus Eaters" so much, it's not so much the plot of the episode that I like, but what is driving the plot. If not for that, then this episode is silly and doesn't work, IMO. One thing I noticed is when La'an talks to Kirk she says she doesn't want it to turn into a 17th century something. I couldn't make out what she said, but I'm assuming she meant song. Anyway, I wonder if this is a reference to "Mulan" because the song she sang in her quarters reminded me of "Mulan." Speaking of La'an, I really like Christina Chong and I like her character. The only problem that we keep running into is Kirk has now spent some significant time with her, you mean to tell me he doesn't recognize the name Noonien-Sihng? She even briefly mentions her heritage. Are they going to try and retcon that Kirk was bound by the Temporal Prime Directive and had to pretend he didn't know who Khan is? So does Spock, Uhura and Chapel. It's a little ridiculous. Speaking of KIrk, so Kirk knows Carol Marcus is pregnant? It's implied in TWOK that he didn't know he had a son, so what, she lied about who's it was? I liked that they played the TOS theme at the end. Kpop Klingons, no, don't ever do that again, ever. Klingon opera would have been better. 9.8/10 Almost perfect, but the Kpop Klingons knocks the rating down a tad. Sorry.
TWOK definitely establishes that David didn't know Kirk is his father, but it's a bit ambiguous whether or not Kirk knew, with many interpreting it as Kirk knew Carol has a child that was probably his, but she hadn't wanted him in the kids life so he kept his distance. It would have been more Klingon, but so much so that Klingons likely already get into operatic singing about battles on their ships. The singing needed to be something that deeply disturbed them.
We know from Voyager and Lower Decks that Klingons have metal and acid punk. I wager they have all the genres, it's just opera is what they like to show off.
I’ll bite: How is the statement, “How could you not tell him?” ambiguous? Kirk clearly knew by the time of TWoK that David was his son. He almost certainly knew when he met David as a child that they were related.
Not a fan of musicals, and thought that this episode was going to be stupid and near impossible to watch. Damn, I enjoyed the hell out of this episode. It's this an episode I'll be able to watch several times? Probably not, maybe once in a while, but not several times. The Klingons' doing breaking out in a choreographed number was... something not expected. Loved it! Overall it was an unexpected surprise and thoroughly enjoyable.
33. The accepted date of his birth is 2233 and reference has been made in reporting to this Lt. Kirk being 27. But If this was all you were going to see of Kirk it would be bad, yet tolerable. . If we take it for granted that a new version of TOS succeeds SNW after the latter has at least five seasons, that show probably lands in something like 2029, or roughly six years away both in universe and IRL That puts Wesley at playing a 33 year old., and the gap only widens in subsequent seasons.
I was beginning to think I was the only one. There are a few musicals I like, but in general I'm not a fan of the genre and even less so when it's not built into the premise of the show. For example, I LOVED "The Greatest Showman" because it's whole point was to be a musical and it was well executed. This was just...awkward, to me. The music itself was fine but it just didn't fit IMO. I liked the general plot and though I think they're using Kirk too much, taking a moment to tie into Carol & Kirk being a thing was good. Also, if they HAD to do this it should have been halfway through next year. Doing the Crossover and this one within a stretch of 3 episodes wasn't something I'd do.
yes... I was referring to Shatner having been 35 at the time he took the role. And hey, I still got carded a couple of times in my early 40s (it's 19 to buy booze here-policy is appearing under 25) I noticed they've got him listed as "Admiral" if you google SNW cast. My bet is that they're skipping his first tour in any future TOS derived series (no point in redoing the entire series), and using the time from then until TMP.
I mean, Tawny Newsome turns 40 this year and Mariner is anywhere between 25 and 30 in age Also, Jack Crusher That said, I wasn't as keen on this version of Kirk but I've warmed up to him in the last two appearances he's made.
Yeah, I know a lot of Trek fans have bitched to hell and back about how "dark" DSC and PIC were and it feels like they're swinging SNW in the exact opposite direction for this reason. Ratio-wise, it's not much different from classic Trek shows but having three comedy episodes in three weeks since the crossover dropped early definitely stands out a lot more. That said, I also wonder with that Gorn thing that coming in the season finale of they may have been front loading all the shenanigans specifically because they may have more gritty stuff planned. I don't think SNW is gonna be "Borg extraction of parts" level of dark but maybe they plan to do a pivot and this all is the calm before the storm
I thought Mariner was older? Like 35+ Her DS9 tour was a decade prior there's at least one unspecified posting, probably before DS9 She's buds with Riker, so that could have been on the D as she has been to Magus 3, 14 years earlier... Her classmate making captain implied over 33.
The quarter-life crisis line seems to imply twenty-something It's possible she was a nerd much like Wesley who got signed up at 16 and was a slightly younger than usual cadet, especially if that lines up with the war effort on DS9. Plus the way Starfleet hands out captaincies is so inconsistent. Didn't that Bolian get one for doing one heroic thing? And he'd been a Lower Decker a year earlier. I also wouldn't be surprised if the Dominion War left a fuck ton of vacancies that allowed for faster advancement. Or maybe even in the 24th century, black don't crack
In all seriousness, Tawny Newsome is adorable as hell, and she's about my age. That said, yeah, it's possible. Still, some of her friends are already Captains, like Captain Ramsey, that's why I think she's at least in her early 30s. Too many ships, too much history, friends who are already Captains, all indicators that she's probably not in her 20s. Then again, again, Lower Decks plays fast and loose with some things, so who knows? Maybe we'll get an episode in the future where she reveals her age.
To us. TNG era humans are more on the 120 average level, from McCoy and what they said about Picard's expected natural lifespan if the Borg Brain Thingy hadn't gotten him. Her being buds with Riker doesn't need to rely on her Starfleet years, though - there's a theory (not expressly rejected by the showrunners) that Carol Freeman was an officer on the E-D on her way up and Beckett grew up on board, so she may know Will from those days.
Ok. I did not like this episode. I actually fell asleep twice trying to get through it. But don’t go by my assessment. I am very much NOT a musical guy. I was only mildly amused by all the Vic Fontaine stuff on DS9. I really liked that this episode did try and add a scientific phenomenon to explain what was happening… and i liked how this ep did advance the story between La’an & Kirk as well as Spock & Chappell. Even thought I didn’t like it, I will try and get through the whole thing again some day and I do appreciate SNW’s bold swing for the fences on this one. I can’t think of another sci-if series to try something like this. This one was just not for me. Maybe if the characters were actually doing something interesting while singing instead of looking at the camera? I don’t know. I hope all my high school drama club nerd friends saw this and jump on board the SNW train.
While it was on I told my wife that maybe if they were just singing I would've liked it more. But when the choreography started they lost me for good.
