I have not "transformed" from anything just because I dump on your sacred topics.

Forcing people to accept this kind of shit is authoritarian. Reconcile that.

Apparently in opening statements, Trump's lawyer argued that Trump was too cheap to have paid that much in hush money.

I'm not sure that's the defense that he thinks it is.

I do wish there were some open, intellectual and honest supporters of Trump here (to the extent such people might exist anywhere) who could explain how the position Trump takes here could possibly be deemed acceptable to them. It seems inherently disqualifying for the presidency to argue with a straight face that presidents not only have absolute immunity for what they do in office, but that they MUST have that level of immunity or they will be paralyzed and unable to function. Somehow 44 people who held the office previously managed to mostly do OK without going fetal at the thought that their opponents would wrongly seek to have them tried for their crimes.

Or if they could address the "Can Joe Biden order Seal Team Six to assassinate Donald Trump and never face criminal charges for it?" hypothetical without either taking the ridiculous position that Trump's attorney effectively did (yes, as long as they are not impeached first....which effectively means that if they prevent their impeachment by assassinating any House members who might vote that way, they are absolutely immune) or without hemming and hawing or tying themselves up into knots (that's different because it's a crime against Trump, not a witchhunt like the crimes the swamp says were committed by Trump).

One of the things that is simultaneously minor and yet telling that was pointed out in the coverage of this is that Trump apparently doesn't have a single family member or friend who has been attending the trial to support him. Even Jeffrey Dahmer had his parents present for every day of his trial.

Good thread on the gag order proceedings (doesn’t seem to have gone well for Trump):

STARTING SOON: Judge Merchan will consider whether to find Trump in criminal contempt of court for violating his gag order and, if so, what the penalty will be.
    https://bsky.app/profile/joshuajfriedman.com/post/3kqsialrdgc26

How fucking funny would it be if NY v Trump (or whatever this is) becomes the case law basis of retweets DO EQUAL endorsements?

(Trumps attorney is arguing that Trump retweeting/retruthing attacks on witnesses doesn’t violate the gag order on attacking witnesses.)

The prosecution isn't seeking jail time for his violation of the gag order, because 'that's what Trump wants.' Unbelievable.

    Put. Him. In. Jail.

Then arrest any idiot that riots. No one is outside the trial. Half the people talking about civil war are shut ins or Russian bots.

    Put. Him. In. Jail.

Regardless of what he might want, I think it would be hard to not give jail time as a initial punishment for violation of a gag order. I think that you should build up to it as the last resort when repeated admonishments and fines prove insufficient to keep him on the straight and narrow.

It sucks that the judge should err on the side of pretending that Trump didn't know repeating others' attacks on the witnesses and jurors doesn't violate the gag order. But I think knowing that everything he does will likely be subject to review, he should be the model of patience.

The Prosecutors listed off a dozen violations of the order already. So I guess the 'first offense' is a dozen. He does it multiple times a day.

If he wants jail, give it to him. I think it's ridiculous that people think that is somehow going to make him more popular. The only ones that will care are cultists already.

Agreed. However, I think Trump has no real idea of how nasty jail is. He may think it’ll be great, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he becomes a prison reform advocate after a few days in Riker’s Island.

The only thing Trump cares about is money. Start with fines large enough to pay for private security of the people he’s harassing, and exponentially increase from there. If he won’t pay, then jail him.

Apparently the fines are capped at $1000 per violation. So not real money to him.

It's not ridiculous that people think it will somehow make him more popular. It likely will deepen the devotion of the cultists, and it may push people who aren't full-blown cultists into thinking that he is being mistreated because they buy into the incorrect notion that his 1st Amendment rights are being violated, or because they don't think that it's appropriate for him to be jailed over a gag order, or any number of things.

It's ridiculous that there are people who might see Trump as a victim here, when any other criminal defendant who pulled the but that's life in 2024.

Maybe after all of them were duped into violence and criminal convictions on Jan 6th some of the more violent ones have realized to pick their battles and not show up to threaten the justice system to release their glorious leader because they do not have the numbers, and jail sucks?

When Trump and his Trumpanzees said fuck around and find out with a civil war for sweet potato hitler, they did find out that no one was afraid to put them in prison. The only one who seems to have the get out of jail free card is Trump, so why should they go to jail to stop something that is not happening anyway?
