It used to be you could slap a park permit on your jeep, throw a tent, sleeping bags and a cooler in the back, take off into the boonies, pick a spot you liked and relax by a campfire. Now it's limited reservations that are completely booked, for fixed campsites you do not get to choose, and exorbitant daily fees. Sure, there are BLM/National forest sites, if you are lucky enough to live within a reasonable drive of an accessible place that isn't already pack to the gills when you find it. Is the problem really you fucknuts with your 300 foot RVs, parking two feet from each other and having raging 200 decibel bloodsport parties where people get hurt/killed before leaving mountains of trash behind? Is the solution once again a mass culling?
I think a lot of people who wouldn't otherwise have gone camping adopted it as a relatively pandemic-safe activity. Hence the crowding. I haven't been camping in years. Been doing a lot of sailing though.
COVID-19 happened. Our national and provincial parks have turned into garbage-infested overpopulated hellholes, thanks to the pandemic and people having nowhere to go. Also, I'm always at a loss as to why people want to turn their back on thousands of years of human progress and sleep on the dirt.
WA State Parks have some first-come sites set aside. Also, there is usually a cancellation or two. As a backup this place is about 45 minutes from me.
whereas if you seize someone's land for a pipeline, it's the free market and freedom and the by god american way!
