Why education in so much of the south is a joke.

Now, I could start with how the entire south just doesn't generate much in the way of high tech jobs or people trained for said high tech jobs (Look at the map, the south just doesn't perform worth a damn: http://www.theatlanticcities.com/jo...ading-high-tech-venture-capital-centers/3058/) but most people know that already and the few that don't deliberately are trying to avoid the truth so that would be a waste of time. What might not be a waste of time is showing what passes for "science" education in parts of the south and then maybe honest people will start to figure out why the place performs so poorly in the high tech field.

This is an actual school "science" test from a 4th grade class in South Carolina. See if you can figure out why the place is full of dumb asses. Yes, it is a private school but one which gets public money. Sad, isn't it?

Yet I am a network administrator for plant floor automation. I have people from plants in the US and Europe calling me for assistance. I was educated in NC not SC though. I think you get what you want out of school. You cannot make someone learn.

Yeah as if we are going to believe that comes from a public school.

It's either a fake or something from some church.

    Fucking idiot.

Dude you are either one incredibly gullible sucker, or an obvious troll.
Both my kids went to Southern schools much of their academic lives. My daughter is in college here as we speak. Thus I can assure you that their 4th Grade science classes were nothing like what this test indicates.

BTW many of my peers have a household income above six figures. I fall somewhat short of that benchmark because my wife doesn't work. Of course we all work in what might be considered "high tech" fields that presumably don't exist.

Not bad for a bunch of back-country rubes. BTW I'm a transplanted Yankee, but don't hold that against me.

BTW for being so behind we sure have a lot of people filling up these new homes sprouting like mushrooms overnight. Better tell them to turn around and head north before it's too late.

I'm not going to stir the honey pot over the Civil War and muck up the thread intent. That said, my daughter will soon be marrying a bright young Navy man (but he went to Southern schools....how can he even know his left from his right?) with relatives that fought in The Confederacy. We have a Confederate graveyard right here on Fort Gordon, afforded the same respect as the other thirty or so graveyards of the families displaced when the Army took the land for their use.

And BTW The North had slaves too, though many forget that. Also The North was profiting by utilizing in their mills and factories the cotton grown and shipped there by those nasty slave owning Southerners. People conveniently forget that too.

But back to the main thread....ignorant people are displaying said ignorance about a subject that they have no first-hand experience with, and I can do is smile and ponder their endless ignorance.

    FTFY.

Now go back to your make believe fantasy land where the South didn't secede because slavery was threatened (in their minds), that hundreds of thousands of blacks willingly fought for the Confederacy, that slavery would have disappeared before the end of the Civil War if the Union just left the poor slave holders alone, and all the numerous and repeated apologetics you go in for because your pappy knew the TRUTH and all the thousands of people that research history for a living are part of the big lie.

    Two things:

    1) Proof this came from an actual school.

    2) How does this school receive public money if it is a private school?

I was educated in a southern public school and a southern state that I know from his previous postings that CS has absolute disdain for.

I never saw anything remotely like this so called science "test" at any of the grade levels.

So because there are no leading high tech job sectors in the south that somehow proves that the south has horrible education? What about all the states in the North and West that aren't leading in high tech? Is their education a joke too?

Well lets's see. What ARE the state rankings in education?

The report also ranks states: Maryland bested all others for the fifth year in a row, scoring a B-plus.Maryland was closely followed by Massachusetts, New York, and Virginia, which received B's. Completing the top 10 were Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, West Virginia, and Kentucky. On the other end were seven states that came in at C-minus: Arizona, Montana, D.C., Nebraska, Alaska, Mississippi, Idaho, and Nevada. California, which educates one-eighth of the nation's students, came in at a C. South Dakota came in dead last, getting D-plus.

Whatever school you went to OP, please ask for your money back. You are the biggest dumb ass that ever posted on the internet.

Beat me to it. California actually teaches science, but when a good chunk of kids can barely read or write English coming out of high school, then who gives a shit?

That's not too much of an exaggeration. I had an English teacher who told our class that she's had papers turned into her filled with l33tspeak and works like "They" and "them" spelled as "Dey" and "dem", to say nothing of the grammar. :jayzus:

Not completely. The states getting B range grades listed by T.A. do a good job. In fact, they are competitive with places like Scandinavia, Japan, etc. on standardized tests. But then there's a whole lot of mediocre and damn awful in the other states.

Because I have the test grades to make me HQT by any national standard.

Ah, so it seems that five of the top ten states are from the south.

Wonder what CS says to that?

I can guess. He'll say Maryland is not a REAL southern state (though it was a slave owning area and traditionally viewed as being "in the south), then he'll say that though Florida is geographically in the south it is more rightly defined culturally as an "East Coast State" without relations to the traditional south.

Still won't change the fact that three clearly "southern states" outclass his beloved California.

What's interesting is that if you google California and education you see nothing but negative stories about that state's education system.

California Drops To 49th In School Spending

California Schools Flunk Education Group Ratings

Really OP? Your state is the biggest in the country and next to last in education spending ? And you're going to cast stones at others?

The OP really put his foot in his mouth with this thread. If you're going to knock another region's education maybe you shouldn't come from such a sorry education state?

I just spent some time on Google image search and can't find anything that appears to be (or even purports to be) an original source for this image with details about what school it's from, etc.

    Which leads to two questions:

    1. How does the OP know it's from a private school that accepts public funds, when as far as I can tell, none of the places where the image appears have any information about where it's from (or even supposedly from)?

    2. How ironic is it when your distaste for gullible people causes you to credulously accept an image like this, as long as it confirms what you want to be true?

100 to 1 says he got it in an e-mail, or from Facebook (notorious for spreading bullshit claims) and because it reinforced his assumptions, he ate it up hook/line/sinker.

As a couple of side notes:

    * Folks point to standardized tests as proof of success, then dis Dayton who obviously passed the standardized tests. Something amiss there.

    * All standardized testing shows is the degree one school manages to teach-to-the-test better than another.

    * as goofy as the pic in the OP is, I'll state the unpopular truth: you can believe the creation story in it's entirety and STILL be a damned fine engineer, software designer, etc. It will hurt you in the biological sciences, but in little else.

You should see his remarks in my gun control thread. He goes off on a tangent about conservatives ignoring reality of polls and the source I used was a poll from Gallup. I don't know if he's just stupid or just a failed troll. I'm starting to believe the former since the education of his home state is such a joke ;)

I don't remember taking a test like that, but my school did entirely just skip the evolution part of biology. We also memorized the books of the bible and bible stories in history class. Thankfully my parents had the time, money, and inclination to make sure my brother and I were enriched outside of school.
