Polled the entire human race, have you? Or just defining them by your own parameters?

This thread is classic Wordforge.

I haven't seen so many unholy alliances since the thread about the lesbian couple feeding their transgendered son estrogen in grade school.

    I agree, it's a good read! ;)

And a tragic display of the "left" in general, which I am still part of in a way. The left chooses the wrong battlefields. Women-hating in games? Yeah, it's possible that it exists. Some gamers are assholes? Definitely. Is it important compared to other issues concerning the treatment of women? Rather not.

This whole absurd "gender studies" stuff got completely out of hand during the last years, IMO. It gives feminism (and the "left" in general) a bad reputation. Many oldschool leftists are not amused how the left is taken over by the p.c. crowd which ignores the important issues. Like fair salaries, secularism, etc...

They are all members of what I call "the new left elite": Very bright, well-educated, mostly urban and well-intentioned people. Good people in general, who sadly have lost contact with the common man (and even look down on the uneducated masses, not caring for their daily plight), living in intellectual ivory towers. Examples for the new leaders of the left.

This is why the left will lose many elections in the future, especially in Europe. Meanwhile, the capitalist fat cats - the real enemies - laugh their asses off and count their money. Sad but true.

As opposed to gamers, who are in touch with the common man...as they splatter him across the screen.

Again, I'm only marginally engaged in this, as stated the thread dynamics here are too fun. Video games in my house are played on the Wii.

But am I seeing that art can and does inspire violence? We're doubling down on that? Because that's certainly the vibe I'm getting and it raises an eyebrow on previous discussions of moral panics du jour.

No, the peer reviewed article that mburtonk made available (sorry about the name mixup) discusses the effects of video games engaged in sexualizing women, and the effects it has on men. Dinner wanted a peer reviewed article on the subject, and he was given one.

There comes a point when human beings have to be held accountable for their own actions.
Our system of jurisprudence kind of hinges on it.

That doesn't really answer my question, if art can alter views, can it then inspire/lead to violence?

No one here has said otherwise.

Art can, theoretically, inspire people to do a lot of things, some good, some bad.

Really, I don't give a flying fuck about sexism in video games. It may exist and it is tiresome, but it is not more than an nuisance among many others. However, as a leftist, I care about: unemployment, distribution of wealth, rents, gas prices, inflation, the banksters and the financial elite, the separation of church and state, and how the average burger flipper at McDonalds can earn enough money to buy food for himself and his kids.

I don't care for: Hurt feelings of extremist feminist women, hurt feelings of religious people, or retarded religious ideas of some immigrants who still live in the middle ages, or "tolerance" and "political correctness" in general.

The whole debate about sexism in video games just shows how rotten and insignificant the whole political discourse has become. And as long as the left focusses on this p.c. shit and is occupied with intellectual masturbation, the left will lose elections. Because people don't care about this shit. Rightly so.

I don't give a fuck about your feud with garamet. She may be wrong on this one and on many other things (being an idealistic hippie leftist who still lives in 1969), but if you are looking for allies, look somewhere else. You defensive gamer freaks are just as annoying as the the leftist p.c. crowd. I have no horse in this race. I hate both sides with a passion! ;)

I like that and thank both of you for it. Last night I was having issues with reading it as my pc monitor died and I'm now reduced to using a tablet until I buy another one (though I'll probaby just end up buying a new system as it is time).

Anyway, the study found that watching images increases the "acceptence of rape myths" so now the question comes down to methodology (how this is measured) and whither or not that actually translates into an increase in real world violence. Tonight I intend to spend handing out Halloween candy and going to a coworker's arty but I will review it this weekend as I brought my work laptop home just to do that.

It is definitely a first world "problem". MY FEELINGS ARE HURT BY SOME VIDEO GAME I HAVE NEVER PLAYED OR HEARD OF BUT SOMEONE TOLD ME SOMETHING BAD ABOUT IT WITHOUT ANY REAL EVIDIENCE! I DEMAND CENSORSHIP!

I admit this "problem" would matter more to me if ANYONE could give concrete evidience so some real world harm but so far nothing of the sort has happened.

I also admit that I find it ironic that Sarkeesian finds it so very, very, very, truly harmful to women that some video game some where, way, way back (her example was Super Mario Brothers from the 1980's) had a damsel in distress troupe in it. Yet what does Sarkeesian do? She decides to pretend she is the white knight to rush in and "save" women from this "oppression" by demanding that video game companies change what they produce so as to no longer produce games she doesn't personally like. Yeah, white knighting is so harmful she decided to become one herself.

However, this kind of statement can be used to dismiss just about anything.

"Sexual harassment in the workplace? Pssshht, who cares when there are women getting beheaded in Afghanistan. A congressman got caught taking bribes? Why should we care -- isn't fighting cancer a much bigger deal?"

Of course you are right. My statement can be used, and abused, to dismiss just about anything.

However, you know that it is not what I wanted to say. Because you have some emotional intelligence and you are above playing semantics just for the sake of the argument.

    At least I hope so.

I do as someone who gives a shit about art.
Those cliches are boring, the repetition in the Sarkeesian videos alone was eye-rolling, how the fuck do they not bore gamers?
As far as "the hobby", goes, I don't have a dog in the hunt, because the last game I played to completion was "GTA: Vice City", 12 damned years ago.
I just hate to see art suck when it doesn't have to.
