Definitely not done in American theaters, though the anthem is played before sporting events and the like. People are supposed to stand, but not everybody does, and it usually isn't a big deal. I could see it turning ugly if a group of obvious Muslims were perceived to be disrespecting the anthem.

Can you give us some more background on this, @Vtrendzzy? Is it recognised as a typical thing for Muslims to refuse honoring the flag there? Idolatry? What's the context?

I guess they should have stood for the Star Spangled Banner like everyone else then.

We usually chat right up until the previews start, at which point you hear lots of popcorn crunching. I love that part of the cinema experience, where things are just starting, all full of hope and excitement. I miss going to the theater.

That said, I feel bad for this family. They did nothing wrong, and yes, saluting/pledging the flag is a form of idolatry in various Islamic sects.

If they were devout Muslims they shouldn't be in a theater anyway. It's a Catch-22.

No, watching a movie is one thing, while pledging allegiance to an object is a different matter entirely. Keep in mind, too, that it is often up to the individual's own faith whether or not they feel such things are harmful. More moderate Muslims have no problem seeing family friendly movies.

More moderate, lol. The more moderate ones are on Amazon today looking for deals on pressure cookers and backpacks.

You say that like it's a bad thing. Even Muslim families need to eat, and carry things to school, wouldn't you agree?

Certainly reasonable points. I think that when most Christians say the Pledge, however, they do so knowing that we are a country founded on Christian tenets.

Indeed. I was that way for a while in high school. I started feeling that pledging allegiance to anything other than my God was idolatrous, and that I was to avoid it.

Ah, I should have suspected fuckery. That's what I get for treating you as a legitimate poster for a second. I'll remember that.

Yeah, the civic religion that enforces nationalistic displays and jingoism is indeed pretty cuntish.

    Both statements are true.

Remember the last time you tried to defend yourself but just ended up admitting that you laughed at people with AIDS? That was great.

I assume that you mean that I laugh at how stupid some people can be. I've always copped to that. Same as people who do drugs and/or smoke. I can laugh at their stupidity but not wish ill upon them. Clearer?

Yes. Revelations even defines him as "the Prince of this world", i. e. a profane government claiming the honours of the kingdom of heaven.
