What are some things you liked about movies you hated? Even bad movies have elements that I often find appealing. To name some for me: Avatar-hated it but I liked the brief view of life in the future on Earth, the glimpse of mining operations on Pandora, Stephen Lang and of course Michelle Rodriquez. Star Trek: The Motion Picture- monumentally dull but I liked the Klingon cruisers at the beginning, the external look of the refitted Enterprise and the score for the movie. Star Trek (2009)- my feelings about this movie are well know but I really liked Bruce Greenwood as Christopher Pike. And the overall "big movie" feel to the whole thing. Hope Floats-yeah, a Sandra Bullock chick flick that my future wife dragged me to. Hated it but I did like the next to the last line of the movie. "Beginnings are kind of scary. Endings are kind of sad. It's what in the middle that counts."- Well said Sandra. Titanic- not the great movie that people have claimed, but it did have phenomenal production values. And Kate Winslets breasts. I'm sure others have their own lists....
alien 3 The story & content of a3 can go die in a fire in my opinion. I say & stress my opinion, because I know a3 has its fans. But visually a3 is very cool, beautiful, & interesting. That's it for now.
I don't hate the movie, in fact I loved it, but the ending to "No Country For Old Men" had me so pissed off I threw my remote at the TV.
Agreed on those points, plus I really enjoyed the visuals and special effects. Could have cared less about the story and 3D aspect. Yeah I was really impressed by Titanic's production values and Kate Winslet's breasts. The movie was so-so in my book, but it's interesting to note that mid-production (or somewhere along the line) they switched focus from action-adventure to romance-drama. Black Dove mentioned No Country for Old Men. Overall, I found the movie to be rather dull except for the character that Javier Bardem played. The ending and Tommy Lee Jones' character especially were awful. The Wicker Man (the 2006 version with Nicolas Cage). A horrible movie by all accounts. But I really enjoy how cheesy parts of it are, it plays as more of a comedy rather than a serious action-drama movie. Plus, watching it with the RiffTrax audio commentary really helps. The Star Wars Prequels. Really enjoyed Darth Maul, Count Dooku, and Samuel L. Jackson along with all of their various fight scenes. Ewan McGregor and Ian McDiarmid were the best actors (especially given the shitty script they had to work with). Really enjoyed some of the production values, including the costuming and makeup of Padme. Turned my brain off for the other 90% of it.
Interesting to see how AVATAR follows the exact same pattern. First half is 'for girls' with all the romance, beautiful vistas and whatnot, second half is 'for boys' with all the action and heavy weapons. Even the hard switch from one to the other after the first steamy encounter is the same. It's no coincidence those two movies are the top grossing films of all time. They are both good, but they are also both carefully crafted to appeal to just about everyone. Only Pixar comes even close to what Cameron pulled off there twice.
There are very few movies I actually hate, though there are plenty that bore me. "Date Movie" was probably the most dreadful movie I've ever seen, but I can't think of anything good about it. Even Alyson Hannigan couldn't save that crap.
"Hellbound:Hellraiser II" (1988) An otherwise utterly forgettable obsessively mindless gory turd from ~a quarter century ago. But despite its numerous shortcomings it has cool & interesting look & visuals (sans the gore OBVIOUSLY). Visually it has a dreamlike feel & look (again, sans the gore) to it. And another thing about this flick is it helps me fall asleep. If it's on & it's late at night, I put it on, a short time later I'm in Dreamland, USA.
I absolutely hated Die Another Day, but thought it was good from the opening through to where Bond leaves Hong Kong. It goes off the rails pretty quick after that and ends with invisible cars & tsunami surfing & Madonna.
