It's all tied up together. Part of the background cause for black poverty is structural racism. Like Packard suggested, if you treat the poverty successfully, you end up also having to treat the race issue.
Hell I'm shiftless and lazy and don't want to work. Math doesn't give a shit - it doesn't judge and neither do I. I'm just stating the facts as they are. Statistically a black is more likely to kill somebody (another black most likely) than a white. No big deal, it doesn't affect me.
That's not what "social justice" means. It means things like: "the distribution of advantages and disadvantages within a society." Can a poor kid go into court and sue some random doctor's kid for having too many toys? The phrase is also taken to mean that everyone has an equal opportunity and all people are treated equally before the law. Once the Republicans ended slavery and Jim Crow, and got women the right to vote, we had all that. The rest is groups claiming victim status to assert demands for things they don't own. But all groups can do that, and it has nothing to do with justice, and everything to do with various forms of power. We can all claim to be members of hundreds of different victim groups because we can just keeping making up new categories and ways we were unfairly impacted. There is no objectivity to be found in it, and no real way to weigh one thing against another. Does a black person get special status because their ancestors were brought over as slaves? Yet if their ancestors weren't brought over, their descendants would have been born in Senegal or Nigeria, if at all. Do even the murderers and rapists get this special victim status, or do their victims get it? Do top professional athletes get it? What about compensating all the white men who can't jump due to genetics? But what if those white men are extroverts who are oppressing introverts? What about the fact that the introverts are silicon valley billionaires? But the tech billionaires' wives face a glass ceiling, so shouldn't we give them a big payout so they can buy a third private jet?
Here in Georgia (at least in the CSRA - Central Savannah River Area) race pretty much means white and black. Hispanics and Asians are totally not even on the radar. That said, they are involved in a lot of criminal activity lately. Not much of it violent, however.
That is a good point, actually. Someone (I think @Nova when she taught) worked at a well off predominantly black affluent school then a blue collar white school. The kids at the black school were well behaved and had excellent graduation rates. The kids at the white school....not so much.
We do have private schools here that are mostly black too, and they also out-perform schools in general. Every race evolved about the same, with the same intelligence in theory. Culture and attitude did not evolve the same. A good example is (in my county) almost every spelling-bee winner or valedictorian or straight-A student is Asian, yet they make up only a small percentage of the county.
wasn't me. I only worked at a poor area school, 75% black. I did make the observation, though, that they poorer white kids were just as much a problem as the poorer blacks - socio-economic situation correlates much more highly with poor behavioral (and educational) outcomes than does race according to the studies we were taught in education school
Or you could note that the opposite also holds, that poor behavior and educational outcomes correlate with sociological economic situation, which makes far more sense.
This is obviously a very small town seeing as the Mayor won by 37 votes and five of the six total police officers resigned. Things are different in towns that size. This very well could have been racially motivated. But, to jump to that conclusion without any evidence is either someone that is intellectually dishonest or someone looking for something to be upset about. Let me give you an example. A town of about the same size elected it's first black mayor. The Chief and all but one of the Police Officers resigned with two months notice to give the city time to hire new people. Why? Because the Mayor ran on implementing some insane plans. The Chief and Officers didn't want to end up getting sued or worse. The Officer that remained was appointed Interim Chief and when the Mayor started implementing his policies with the new hires, guess what? Lawsuits and the State Attorney General's Office launched four separate investigations.
