But that wasn't some grand design.
The three years was how long it took to crank out the effects, and the decade break from ROTJ to TPM was Lucas raising his kids and thinking he was retired, and the gap from ROTS to TFA was Lucas thinking he was retired again, and then realizing he had to sell it off before he died and it went to the lowest bidder.

The downside to these stupid gaps, is it let people make these goddamned movies into a religion.
That hasn't been good for fandom IMHO.

Lots of the things that turned SW into a cultural phenomenon were accidental yeah, but it seems Disney were too excited about the license to recognize they even existed.

I'll mostly agree with that, although Marvel released 2-3 movies per year and you didn't get the fan fatigue that you're getting with Star Wars.

Also, you didn't have the internet during the Original Trilogy. Pretty sure that would have very much changed the dynamic of the fanbase.

Here's the evidence, from the Walt Disney Corporation itself:

    https://www.thewaltdisneycompany.com/disneys-fiscal-full-year-and-q4-2019-earnings-results-webcast/

Oh, wait. You mean attendance is down but revenue is up? And that Disney is happy about the minor drop in attendance because massive crowds detract from the visitor experience, and visitors spend more when they're happy and not fighting crowds? (In fact, if you pay attention to Disney's financials -- which I do -- they have been trying to moderate the crowds at their properties for some time because of this very fact.)

But of course, that doesn't feed into the fanboy hate narrative.

    Attendance is down!

    Star Wars sucks!

Disney touched me in my no-no child place!

Agreed, although very few people expend energy constantly shitting all over them.

Star Wars and Star Trek fans are a weird breed. It's like they take everything personally.

I really didn't like the Lord of the Rings films. But I don't expend any amount of energy crapping all over them. You know what I did? Nothing. I didn't even bother seeing the Hobbit trilogy and I didn't waste time on an internet message board barking about how my childhood was raped or how anyone who likes the films are clearly idiots.

Oh, Trek/Wars fans aren't unique. I listen to a podcast where the host never misses an opportunity to shit all over the Peter Jackson films. He's at least reasonable about it in that he doesn't just randomly do it, but they do crop up with regularity.

Nor do they have a lock on extreme pettiness. Up until about 2010, all but one of the 51 Tuckers built had been accounted for. The one that was missing was last seen in Olympia, WA. The guy who'd started the Tucker Club (and knew more about the cars than just about anyone else) said he'd "forgotten" where the car was. Which is bullshit. You don't obsess as much over a car as he did and then "forget" where that car was located. Nor, as it later turned out, was it a case of the owners of the car wanting to keep their possession of the car secret (after all, people would be happy to pony up all kinds of money for the car). The week after the founder of the Tucker Club died, the family that owned the missing Tucker pulled it out of the barn they had it in and put it up for auction. It sold for something like $700K+. They sat on that car until they knew that there was no chance the club founder would ever have anything to do with it. That, my friend, is some petty fucking bullshit. They basically let the car rot in a fucking barn for decades rather than risk the chance that one particular person would own it.

I’ve never seen the Hobbit films so I say nothing about them or the books they are based on. I don’t complain about Dr. Who or Harry Potter or a whole host of other franchises that I don’t pay attention to.

I’ve seen all the Star Wars movies. Multiple times. I’ve bought multiple copies of the movies. First VHS and then DVD and then digital. I’ve bought the music for the movies. I’ve read a lot of fiction books, played all the video games going back to the Atari 2600, bought clothing, toys, collectibles, kitchen stuff.

My latest purchase: R2-D2 fountain pen.

So yeah I’m going to complain when I see Star Wars being handled like crap which is exactly what Disney is doing. So much so that no matter how they spin it, and no matter how much blind fanboys like WAB let themselves be skull-fucked and swallow everything, that you can see they are in trouble.

Galaxy’s Edge is in trouble. Future movies have been cancelled and are going on hiatus.

Stuff like that doesn’t happen if things are going great. Of course Disney is going to spin it as they sure as hell don’t want to admit they messed up.

Keep taking it all down your throat WAB. Disney loves fanboys like you.

Star Wars is in trouble, whether fantards like @We Are Borg wants to believe it or not. They've fired more directors than have hired and Rian Johnson's trilogy is probably next.

To be real, Star Wars has always been primarily about making money. But the first two trilogies also had stories they wanted to tell.

The OT was about the hero’s journey. How a young boy becomes a hero and how a rebellion defeats an empire. Basic stuff but effectively told (perhaps in spite of Lucas, who was always more interested in visual effects than story and dialogue).

The PT also had a story it was trying to tell. How does a good person turn bad? How does a society become tyrannical? Basically the inverse of the originals. Unfortunately there were only yes men around and no one to check George’s worst impulses. A little tweaking of the scripts and I think they could have been better. Interesting ideas but hard to watch. But they made lots of money.

Now the sequels are also trying to make money. Just like all the other movies. But what story are they are trying to tell? It seems like JJ Abrams either forgot about that part or didn’t care. He probably figured someone else would wrap it up for him. What is this trilogy about? It seems like it’s just a remix of the originals. The hero’s journey... but we don’t know where she comes from or what motivates her. We don’t even see her grow in power, she just starts off that way. A rebellion fights an empire. Not even a different empire, the exact same one. Same storm troopers, star destroyers, tie fighters, planet killers, and dark lords. Now even the same emperor!

So what did they accomplish in ROTJ? Nothing apparently... since they are fighting the same fight all over again. I think it’s good that they are taking a break from more movies. Star Wars is creatively dead. Like Terminator and many other franchises, there is no real reason for it to continue other than to make someone some money.

I'm hopeful that TROS will be great--I liked TFA and TLJ--and I don't place too much stock in rumors, but I am a little concerned that the final episode in the saga seems under-planned.

If it is to be a saga, there should be a unifying theme, and established elements should converge for a final resolution. Instead, TROS appears to be ret-conning a theme onto the Sequel Trilogy.

If, as seems apparent, they're going with the Scooby Doo "It was Palpatine all along" ending, it seems like this was just pulled out of their ass. There's been NOTHING to lay the groundwork for this.

The last Bond film, Spectre, did something similar, ret-conning not only a connective tissue between the prior Daniel Craig movies but a personal connection between Bond and the main baddie. And it felt totally contrived.

Oscar Isaac says the movie opens with the Resistance messily trying to assemble themselves, and they're like "a leaky ship".

Daisy Ridley says while the answer to Rey's parentage in TLJ is technically true, there's more to it.

And JJ says he still got to tell the story with Leia he had planned before Carrie died.

Well, except when they give the whole movie away in the trailer like "Batman v Superman", but Disney isn't that dumb.

Remember when you said this: “Star Wars was a big part of my youth and I've spent a lot of money on useless crap. Now that I'm a bitter middle-aged fanboy, I'm pissed off that Disney isn't giving me the Star Wars that I want!” That’s you except replace Disney with George Lucas circa 1999. You do the exact same thing you accuse others of doing.
