No, nothing is what we would have had if Stone and Parker had gone back in time, and gotten idiots like you to call "ST:TMP", "memberberries", and killed the franchise there.

A little thing called story. The Borg cube served absolutely no purpose.

Just a side note, Seven has a huge head, like comically huge.

But here's a bigger question. Clearly the Borg took her left eye so the EMH had to make her a new one and wire it to her brain. Yet all those xB's lacked eyes. And Geordie!

    Huh?

It provided a backdrop for explaining the Romulan history and attitude toward synthetics.

It provided a location for Narek to investigate :diacanu: Soji. Soji had to be somewhere while Picard was finding her.

Borg technology also gave Picard and Soji the headstart needed to stay a couple days ahead of the Romulan fleet.

True, the cube itself wasn't critical to the plot, but it played a role in the story.

I know, it's sill comically huge. Instead of a 'four'head she has a fivehead.

The Doc had a hardon for her, the xB's just had some Romulans doing the work, and probably didn't care if they had two eyes.

Because the fans would have been pissed off if there was no mention of the Borg. Just be glad they didn't include Q in the series.

Thankfully the Borg weren't central to the story like the fear of some fans that somehow in the past the Romulans accidentally created the Borg.

I just don't see why fans would however be upset if there was no mention of the Borg.

Because for a lot of them, the introduction of the Borg was when TNG got really good. I can remember one of my friends jabbering away about how, after he’d initially worried that the Borg were just “too powerful,” that they were the best thing about TNG and then him sweating bullets because he was worried they were going to kill off Picard in the second part of Best of Both Worlds. Let’s not forget that the first purely TNG cast movie involved the Borg.

If they had done this series without the Borg, there would have been twice as many fuckwits clogging up YouTube complaining about the series.

So the Borg Collective is probably still active somewhere. Considering they are one of the most powerful races in the galaxy and considering how large their territory is, I wonder if they have encountered these Ubersynths?

Also why haven’t they launched any more full scale attacks on Earth? You would think after Voyager Endgame they would have sent thousands of cubes to obliterate the Federation.

Your other questions are valid, but I don't think we should assume that everyone is bound to progress to higher and higher rank. Only a small proportion of captains can ever become Admirals.

Plus he probably took himself out of contention by leaving Star Fleet and going into Star Fleet's version of the reserves. Seems he only jumped back in for this particular mission although it would be interesting to see how long he has to stay in now before he can get out again.

VOY: Relativity put Seven in a standard uniform, and it looked better on her than any of the catsuits ever did.

Meanwhile, the canonical excuse for those catsuits was that they were some magical nonsense necessary to keep her skin regenerating after she was de-Borgified. I’ll leave it as an exercise for the reader to argue that Picard should have respected that bit of canon.

Regarding the finale, it left some threads hanging like the fate of Narek and Sutra (though that certainly was...a...callback to Insurrection). Picard-as-Android didn’t end up bothering me as much as I thought it would, but I think that’s because they tied it in to providing the send off for Data that Nemesis forgot to.

Things are set up nicely for S2 - they won’t need to invest a third of the episodes in getting the band back together. Might be interesting to check in with how Gul Madred handled the fall of Cardassia...

God help me, I rewatched Voyager’s Endgame.

Funny how in that alternate timeline Seven died before they made it back to the Alpha Quadrant but in the prime timeline she is alive and well and kicking Romulan ass. So Admiral Janeway was right after all.

It was stated in Voyager Endgame that the Borg had six transwarp hubs across the galaxy, allowing them to reach any quadrant instantly. Voyager destroyed the Delta Quadrant hub and one incarnation of the Queen but they are most certainly still one of the most powerful races in the galaxy. And First Contact established that they had time travel technology! So they control most of time and space and that is likely still the case.

As for Picard, in his alternate continuity from the TNG finale he was married to Beverly Crusher. No mention of her here. I would like to know what happened with their relationship, if anything. Or did he go back to that chick from Insurrection?

We know Guinan will be back for season 2 because Patrick Stewart formally invited Goldberg while on The View. And it’s not like she has shit better to do right now so I think she is definitely returning. How about Wesley as the Traveller? Wil Wheaton is hosting an official Star Trek Picard All Access show on the CBS YouTube channel so I would be surprised if he didn’t show up somewhere down the road. He seems to be ‘in’ with the right people to make that happen.

Finally, are we done with the whole Romulan/Synth storyline and off to new adventures in season 2? I hope so. I don’t think we need more than a season of that and everything seems to have been wrapped up on that front. I kind of like these quick 10 episode arcs.

I sort of wish DS9 had been 20-22 episodes instead of 26... we could have trimmed the fat and eliminated some of the shittier episodes like the Ferengi ones or stuff like The Muse. There were only about 3-4 awful episodes of DS9 every season. The rest was fucking great.

Don't forget Worf. He's one of the most popular characters since TNG started, he will no doubt show up sooner rather than later. Plus, if you pay attention to any of the TNG cast's twitter feeds, they all seem to be great friends, hang out socially and every one of them has had some involvement in pushing the Picard show.

When Picard is dying/dead you see the folks breaking down, crying their eyes out, hugging, falling over...that moment felt false to me. For one thing, he was back to normal the next minute later (and no reaction to that) and also it felt overdone and histrionic.

And I think that’s because we don’t usually see characters act like that in Star Trek. Think about all the times an important character died and the way the other characters responded. There were silent tears, there was anger... but you rarely saw the actors overdo it.

Sometimes subtle is better. Like think of when Kirk just slumped down wordlessly against the glass separating him from Spock. Or the dead silence after he choked out, ‘Klingon bastards... you killed my son.’ People talk about Shatner over-acting and hamming it up but those were perfect moments and probably some of his best scenes.

I found that more effective than the over dramatic reactions to Picard’s death. Crying scenes are hard, if you don’t do it right it could come off as goofy. Plus it was an obvious and manipulative moment in the script. He’s the star of the show, you know he is coming back... they even telegraphed it earlier in the episode. Could have kept it till next season at least.

In the case of Spock (at the time anyway), David, Tasha, Jadzia, etc. it was more impactful because we knew it was the end and we’d never see them again. Spock was dead for a few years between movies.

They couldn’t wait even a few minutes before they brought Picard back to life. I guess they wanted a more happy ending for the show. But then why bother with killing him at all? Or how about keeping him dead and let the season end on a cliffhanger?

Then open season 2 with the surreal scene of Picard and Data having their conversation. It would be a great mind fuck moment for the fans. Sort of like when Kara returned at the end BSG season 3 after being dead for half the season.

    Just some random thoughts.

Remember that episode of DS9 when they found the Jem ' Hadar ship and that crewman who was friends with O'Brian got injured? We all knew he was going die. Worf was being a dick the whole time then at the end the crewman died. Then they go back to the station and O'Brian is sitting by the casket of his friend and Worf shows up and sits with him. That's a very powerful scene and it's very sober. You don't see people crying hysterically and being overly emotional. Sisko never cried over many of the people who died under his command. We saw the same thing in NuBSG with Adama. These are Starfleet Officers, you're supposed to conduct yourself a little more professionally. Not only that, but you just don't buy it from this group. If it were the cast of TNG, sure it would be a little more believable. Contrast that with Discovery. Everyone is always crying, hugging, and being overly emotional. Nobody stays strong for the rest of the crew. It's proof that Kurtzman and crew have never had to deal with major loss and don't understand how to realistically portray war.

I agree but, when did S2 get the green light? Before or after S1 was in the bag? If it hadn't been given the green light and it gets canned after season 1, do they really want to get the wrath of the fans for killing off one of the great characters in the Trek universe?

Yeah there were rare moments where characters broke down. Like Picard after he got assimilated and confronted his brother. And Sisko in the infamous Benny scene.

Also Adama did rage out of control at a few points towards the end but that was after years of going through this shit. The occasions I remember are Kara dying, Dualla dying, and when Tigh revealed he was a Cylon. He was even ready to shoot himself! But those moments felt earned.

I guess I can understand Elrond crying, he’s still a kid and that was like a father to him. I just didn’t buy it because we all knew it was a fake out.
