Good social platforms like Facebook will only give their data to good and trustworthy people like Amazon.com and the US government, who will only use the data for good and sensible purposes, while evil ones like TikTok might give their data to those evil Chinese to be used for evil schemes. You see why we have to do something about TikTok and not about anyone else.

I've never understood why Tiktok got so popular in the first place. It's pretty much the exact same service as Youtube. Just with less advertising.

The banning of tik tok is only because the dems and repugs fear it because they were told it is what the kids are using to organize. They do not like it because it seems to be in control of the Chinese government.

Oddly, things like actual free speech on the internet, and net neutrality have often relied on servers outside of US and basically NATO control. This has actually run back to the origins of the internet. Back in the day when most people were on AOL and european/canadian/australian ISPs you always had an account in places like China, Russia, and other more slavic areas because their admin propagated things like IRC, usenet, and email that was not in control of american, european, and judeo/christian censors.

This shit is not new. You are not going to eliminate the insecurities created with China and Russia by banning Tik Tok. Places like China and Russia have always been providing contraband to american and european markets. Thje reason why you use them is because they do not work with NATO spying and censorship. Unless they are banning everything associated with the opposition of nato the only reason to goi after tik tok is revenge for being where people have gathered because it does not use algorithms that promote mainstream propaganda for the US and it's allies while squelching everything else.

Lots of establishment politicians saying the quiet part out loud since they passed this. Others will play the games but it's clear what this is.

Less advertising makes all the difference to some people. It also fills the "short video" niche left by Vine. Quicker to load an embed in a browser. The actual website probably doesn't have gigabytes of jank to load like YouTube, which matters when you're geared toward people watching lots of sub-minute videos and following your particular algorithm designed to keep them clicking/scrolling. Plus it's the hip new thing aimed at youth and that will draw young people looking to make names for themselves in a new landscape.

Also, it's a propaganda machine controlled by the CCP. A great platform to influence impressionable young minds and fan the flames of division. Any country that you can think of that's more divided than it has been since, oh, the 1860s?

You know who else has banned TikTok? China.

Listening to one of the members of Strict Scrutiny on this it looks like the government is on shaky legal ground. SCOTUS (the majority of which are still on the court) has not just ruled that foreign propaganda is protected by the 1st but explicitly Chinese propaganda.

And that the data privacy concerns ring hollow considering Congress hasn’t thought it important enough to pass a data privacy law.

This person seems to think that they will throw out the propaganda part out on 1st grounds and tell Congress to pass a data privacy law if they want to force divestment on those grounds.

Which Congress should have done at least a decade plus ago but if this gets them to act good. I am totally okay with using a Chinese Boogeyman to get good policy. But I worry it might be the same result as them gutting Section 5 and 4(b) of the VRA due to them being outdated and telling Congress to update it and come back.

Here’s a crazy idea, parents can restrict their kids’ phone usage rather than move censorship from the government.

The algorithm is really good at showing people content they will find interesting, and the short form nature of things is different to YouTube. There's also very little friction to create and respond to videos.

How much of the bill was written in terms of propaganda though, vs national security? No one had much of a problem when we did this in 2020 with Grindr.
