Yeah, in response to others posting about GamerGate. I'm not the one who brought it up, and I never even mentioned Sarkeesian personally.

Just a small note on gaming "journalism". The level of corruption involved in it makes all of the regular news organizations look positively pristine.

"Sex for reviews" isn't even a blip on the radar of the real corruption.

Advertising dollars, early copies and swag are the real culprits.

Advertising dollars = If you say the new Battlefield game blows dead goats (even if it does) do you think your gaming "news" site is going to see any of those big Electronic Arts advertising dollars?

Early Copies = If you say Grand Theft Auto V sucks (even if it does), do you think Rockstar you will get any more advanced copies for review?

Swag = If you say Destiny is the worst game ever (even if it is), do you think Bungie is going to send you a box of free games, T-shirts and other shit?

It's fairly widely known that most of the big game news sites are firmly in the pocket of the big publishers. Some still deny it, but it changes nothing.

IGN was somewhat infamous for it, as I recall. Ironically, they've been one of the more reasonable sites when it's come to GamerGate.

Whelp, like I said a zillion pages ago, the easy fix, is if you think a site is corrupt, just don't click there anymore.
You don't need those assholes anyway.
Word of mouth from friends, or renting the game yourself will tell you everything you need to know.

For me it's mainly the hypocrisy from the same crowd that gave us Atheism+. I also don't much care for being accused of any number of horrible things just by virtue of the fact I've referred to myself as a gamer, since, you know, I play games.

You know, before the whole "gamers are dead" bullshit, some of us joked that they'd probably coin the term "Gamers+" at some point, but they decided to go with "Players" instead. This is especially amusing in light of what the term "Player" has meant for a while now.

This topic came up tonight at dinner and my wife had a interesting perspective.

What is your relationship status with women, your knowledge of the industry and stance on this issue. Be sure to include time.

I'll go first.

Married. 6 years (7 total in relationship). Wife has been in the tech industry for 4 out of those 7 years, excluding 3 where I took here to Fayettenam. During that time I have witnessed second hand pretty egregious sexism in the tech industry. I also live with my sister in law, probably spend about 10 hours a week hanging out. All other women, excluding work interactions, about 10 hours a week hanging out.

I believe that there are serious issues of sexism in the tech industry, with the gaming industry as a follow on.

So, who wants to go next?

There is some sexism, I'm pretty sure no one said there was none, but there is sexism in just about any industry.

What grates on people is when people hold up a few dedicated TROLLS as an example of the whole. There are people in this thread doing this, ironically they get irate and self righteous if you use a few Muslims as an example of the whole. They are also the same people who completely discount that some of these women are actively trying to bring the trolling upon themselves and then using it to push their agenda. Presenting yourself as a martyr is a powerful tool.

Also, the industry is not as closed to women as some like to present. I know for any big game I am following, whenever you see the devs there are always a few women in the mix.

So maybe if this an issue, it may be something more in the "indie" game arena.

It's hard to really tell though, because as I said up thread, gaming "press" is amazingly corrupt. It just may or may not be in the way Gamergate originally started. I do know there have been several "sex" for favors scandals in gaming history, so if the original accusations were true, it would not be the first time.

So what was your wife's perspective?

So yeah, there are people who know more about this than you.

Plenty of women going through the various engineering programs at my university. Only downside I could see is that a lot of them seemed a lot more serious about their studies then the guys tend to be. The only sexism I really saw was that there was a general assumption that being a woman in engineering meant you were super smart and guys might try to crib your homework or try to be in a group project with you with the hope you'd do all the heavy lifting. Of course the slackers that did that would really latch on to anyone they felt was smarter than them so they could slack.
