Well, I've got it now, and I'm not exactly dancing a jig. Things seem sluggier and boggier performance wise. Took 4 hours to install. It re-activated my broken DVD-ROM, and I had to re-uninstall it to get some performance back. My audio was utterly dead, and I had to do a manual audio driver update in control panel. I don't really see any advantages over 7 so far...
Took about an hour. Moving on from 7, nothing spectacular, but lots of nice little improvements all over.
So... Windows has decided that everyone you know should have your wifi password? https://krebsonsecurity.com/2015/07/windows-10-shares-your-wi-fi-with-contacts/
^ Wifi-Sense. You can easily disable it, but these guys have a better take on the whole thing: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015...ares-your-passkeys-no-you-shouldnt-be-scared/ That said, I'm loving it. It's much faster than Windows 7, all of my programs are installed, and I'm already finished setting it up how I want it. Cortana is awesome on the desktop, the new start menu lets me load it full of apps without running out of room, and it's just really fucking fast. My hardware is 7 years old, and W10 makes it run like brand new. Apps start up without hesitation, files copy quickly, it's terrific! A few pics of the desktop:
You can force the download if you don't want to wait. That's what I did. Just go to this link, download the software, and when it starts say "Upgrade this PC": https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
You don't actually need the blank USB or DVD. The installer program gives you the option of creating physical installation media, but you also have the option of directly installing on the system you're using to download. I'm doing that right now after the Windows 10 upgrade failed to download automatically.
Day 2: *Loving* the new interface. It's not one thing, but all around the experience has just gotten better in so many small ways. And it's not as if I was unhappy with Win 7 before. I considered it the best Windows so far; judging from the first two days, it's now been replaced.
I'm noticing no difference at all. If anything, it's slowed my computer down. Its gotten a bit better, but still enough to upset me.
Okay, I mean, there's little tweaks in the start menu and file explorer, but it's bells and whistles I'll never use.
They brought back task view, that's a neat little toy, but I end up turning it off, ditto the search thing. I know where my shit is. Maybe I'm a jaded dick, but I'm not seeing what's so splendifferous.
I haven't personally seen splendiferous changes to Windows in over a decade. I've become an OS/UI agnostic at this point.
Linux? Win10 downloaded last night. On a newish I3 machine it is splendiferous, but I'm easily entertained. I turned on Cortana. It's fun having a sexually aroused computer I can talk to. On a side note, if you use Windows Media Center, Win10 does not support WMC. Stay on Win8 or Win7 if you need it. This only applies to users of WMC of which I'm probably the only one. WMC provides a free DVR with a TV program guide. It's like TIVO without the monthly subscription fee.
Waiting for my notification. Going on a test VM first, no way in hell am I upgrading any of my dev VM's just yet (host PC is OSX...)!
At first blush, extending the desktop to multiple screens is much better than on Win7. The task bar displays (is mirrored) on both and is unobtrusively hidden. Start button is what I wished for. Managing open windows seems improved. I haven't played with the new browser (edge) much. It performs well; even without adblock, ads seem less obtrusive and page rendering is fast. It imported bookmarks from chrome with no fuss, but I like how chrome syncs things between machines. I'm sure edge does too, but I don't know a practical way to use that on work machines. Mainly I like it for not having to hunt for functions. It's intuitive.
The story so far: My laptop said it was already to go, so I told it to install. Everything went fairly quickly, it said it needed to reboot, did the reboot, and started installing components. Some time after it got to 25%, it shutdown. When I restarted it, it said, "Restoring Your Previous Version of Windows." When that came back up, it decided to check for updates, which is taking forever. It is presently in the process of downloading Windows 10. Again. My tablet over the past couple of days, has lost all the free space on its drive. Deleting files and programs would only temporarily free up space. I suspect that it has downloaded and hidden the Win10 update on the system, but I'm unable to find the folder where its stored, and the flag in the taskbar has disappeared. My main PC has the flag in the taskbar, and when I click on it, it tells me that I'm "almost ready" and that they'll notify me when I can install the update. Given the issues with my laptop and tablet, I'm not at all upset by this. I'd rather wait until I got at least one of my other machines migrated to Windows 10 before I screw around with my main PC.
Hmm, I hadn't considered this for my tablet. I have one laptop with Windows 7, but won't upgrade that for now, as it is primarily my wife's computer, and she is change averse. My two desktops are old XP boxes. They could probably run Win 10, but I don't feel like paying for it, since neither is used very often. That leaves the tablet. I'll definitely consider the upgrade for that, will have to take a look at the updates options.
If its running RT, you won't get it. They're planning on offering "something" for RT devices, but they haven't said exactly what, only that it won't be Windows 10, and that it won't be out until later this year.
I've decided to use the download link above and do it now. I can't wait for the notification. Have too much work to do over the next few days, so if it goes boom, I need it to go boom now so that I can sort out any probs first thing in the morning an then get back to work.
Whelp, I give up. It attempted to install on the laptop again, but failed. I'll give it a few days and try again. Maybe they'll have the bugs worked out by then.
