I don't see how somebody being transgendered affects their ability to fight or be deployed to a combat zone. I'm not transgendered but I have been deployed to a combat zone - I'm scratching my head to connect the dots between the two.

it is true that for the very few who would seek GRS while on active duty, they would be restricted for a similar amount of time to a pregnant soldier in the course of pregnancy, giving birth and recovery....which is not banned. It is true that a BA sidelines the recipient - trans or not - for a certain period of time, but non-trans recipients are not forbidden.

There is a figure floating around out there that adds together days lost from a theoretical GRS and a theoretical BA, but that's a "worst case" as (a) most won't get GRS, (b) most won't get a BA, (c) not everyone who gets one will get both, and (d) it ignores the reality that if one is going to get both, they are either widely separated in time, or done in the same procedure (which it would be perfectly fair for the service to require anyone getting both to do them at the same time to minimize recovery)

So if you can accommodate a soldier getting pregnant and delivering, you already have the structure in place to accommodate surgical transitions.

If transgendered pass all the tests to get in the military and trans people have already had successful careers in the military on what basis can they deny people who want to join up?

Sounds like pretty blatant discrimination as well as loss for the military if they are rejected able bodied people who actually want to serve and protect.

This has nothing to do with troop effectiveness and or unit cohesion. It's just Trump throwing more red meat to his dwindling base of supporters.

headlines are kinda misleading - the order directs Mattis to come up with a plan to implement and there was already a delay in place while the subject was (again) "studied, with that report due in February. So it's not exactly like Mattis said "piss off"....but if he handles it right he should be able to push implementation off until after the 2018 elections which would hopefully produce a Dem controlled House which would have the power to further meddle with it.

I'm glad I'm not in the military anymore. They go back-and-forth on their standards all the time, so you're never really out of the woods the whole time you are in. And no, they do not "grandfather" you in most areas - you have to adjust to the changing standards or you are kicked out. Basically you need the military more than the military needs you. That said I do hope the military will "sdhit or get off the pot" about this issue - it's getting really silly & counter-productive.

Before fuckface was elected, the Navy was already implanting training about what would be required to go through GRS. With all the people they kicked out for arbitrary reasons in the early 2010s, they want to keep people by any means necessary.

Good. The ban was pure bigotry meant to appeal to social conservatives and against the actual advice of anyone in the military. Hopefully it will be blocked entirely soon.

If trump keeps banning people from the military his children may have to serve. Oh wait, that would never happen because he would get them deferments just like his daddy did for him. It is a bit ironic that the man too cowardly to serve is now trying to tell willing people they cannot serve. Where does he get off denying that to people who are far more patriotic and American than his Russian puppet ass? It is not like any of them are off selling favors to Putin like him and his family. Seriously, if trump was too sick to enlist he should really be too sick to command the military or set standards for them.

That's what I don't get. The recruiters got a message a few weeks ago banning them from processing green card holders and they're now trying to kick out the transgender troops already on active duty. And when the economy is as good as Trump claims it is people don't typically rush out to enlist, not even poor people.

So...where is he gonna pull recruits from?

Pound-for-pound being a pilot is about as "high risk" a job as you can get. My entire military career I was involved with aviation - a lot of pilots both fixed wing and rotary bite the dust. And he served in the sandbox too! Now he's walking across England to benefit injured soldiers. He doesn't have the time to devote to the further & constant training as a pilot so I respect his decision to ground himself for the safety of others - all around great guy no doubt about it!
