Cheney to retire for health reasons, and Bush to name McCain as his replacement.

My prediction: Cheney steps aside because of this "ailement", and Bush names AZ Senator John McCain as his replacement.

This will be done for two reasons; 1) This will give the GOP a huuuuuuuuuuuge advantage in the next election. 2) to re-pay McCain for not running for election in 2004. (We could also say for the "dirty politics" that was played on McCain in the 2000 election, but that might be a stretch)

You just know Bush will come out with a signing statement, or a "executive order" or something. But to tell the truth, I don't know who names the V.P. if his post is vacant.

Doesn't it automatically pass to the Speaker of the House?

President can nominate one. Nixon had to do this IIRC.

Yes, they will back him on it. Because it's what the Constitution dictates will happen.

Cheney will either serve until the end of the term or die in office.

I believe it goes to the Speaker of the House if both the Pres and Vice Pres are out of action.

I wouldn't mind seeing just that happen. It'd be the nail in the coffin for McCain's bid for the Presidency. :diablo:

It would be interesting to see. For some reason I doubt that Bush would choose McCain.

Bush would sooner choose Hillary than McCain.

But it was speculated some time back that Cheney would resign in mid 2007 due to "heart trouble", and that Condi would get the VP spot, and run for President.

You can tell who the young ones are, who don't remember 1973.

Those were the glory days of American politics! The VP goes to jail, the president has to name a new VP quickly before he gets booted out of office as well, the Democrats in Congress (majority in both houses) threaten to stall confirmation so they can impeach Nixon first, thus making the (Democrat) Speaker of the House into a new President without even having to bother with the technicality of an election...

The "scandals" they have these days, with "...gate" tucked at the end of every one of them to try to make it seem like they are something big, are peanuts in comparison. If you want corrupt politics, ask Richard "I am not a crook" Nixon. He knew how it was done! :techman:

I think IF Cheney stepped aside (unlikely but conceivable) Bush would do his best to nominate Condi just to be able to claim the first female and first black in that high an office.

And the Dems would pitch a bitch for exactly the same reason (though they would posture it was about her decisions as SecState)

In any case, if confirmed, she would not seek the presidency this late.

The only real wild card to all this is this: if Condi were nominated, would it be worth it to the Cems to burn the political capital to block her when she would only be in there less than a year anyway?

In other words....are they that stupid?

    This is true.

But it seemed unfair to diminish the accomplishments of the merely competent amateur by comparing him to the true professional.

I forget, did Washington get elected or appointed? If the former, Gerald Ford is the only President of the US who wasn't elected. With everything else that was happening in the world, the Illuminati were too badly overextended to rig an election, so they had him installed directly. ;)

Ummm....If you're talking Elected to the Office of President, then you're wrong. The list of Presidents who weren't actually elected to that office is a bit longer than that.
