The Defense Minister has publicly called for a halt to Netanyahus to stop his plans to change the judiciary. He's since been fired and a number of other Israeli government officials have resigned over the firing or the legislation. I'll be honest in saying that I can't quite figure out what's going on with the legislation because, by some accounts, it doesn't sound too different than what we have in the US (not perfect, but not horrible, either). However, when you have massive numbers of people from all sides of the political spectrum in the country saying that it's wrong and will destroy democracy in Israel, you kinda have to pay attention.
TLDR; Prime Minister Netanyahu (currently on trial for corruption) and his coalition are trying to ram through a ‘judicial reform’ that would allow any Supreme Court ruling to be overturned by a simple majority of the Knesset (their parliament). Most Israelis are opposed and there have been months of protests culminating in this. Also today the unions, national chamber of commerce and the banks have all agreed to go on a general strike. https://twitter.com/nadav_eyal/status/1640101409847746562 Not an expert but this seems bad for the government.
That's it right there. That's what all the hip fashies are doing; back against the wall, they pull the "oh yeah!? Well fuck your judges!!" card.
The problem is the government CAN’T back down as the need to be able to override the judiciary is what unifies the entire coalition. If these ‘reforms’ don’t go through the government will likely fall and Israel will have its sixth election in four years. Netanyahu needs to be able to throw out his upcoming corruption conviction. Another bloc is headed by a guy who went to prison in Israel for gross human rights violations and a case is going through the courts saying he can’t be a minister. The Settler bloc wants to be able to bulldoze any Palestinian home even those with ‘proper’ deeds which their Supreme Court has ruled against. And the Ultra Orthodox want their kids exempted from military service which the Supreme Court also overruled. Really nice coalition they got there. But yeah. This will be a showdown.
Holy Fuck. Maybe I should have realized it when it was reported that the business community and banks agreed to support the strike to the end but I thought that was just like verbal solidarity. Didn’t realize it was actual, like, real support. Call me cynical but I could never see the US business community/financial sector having this kind of patriotism/morals. For the first time in history, Israel's main union, as well as leaders from the banks and the entire business sector, are about to declare a general strike demanding that the government stop the judicial coup. Employers have committed to paying full wages to workers. https://twitter.com/nadav_eyal/status/1640110174554783745 So basically the banks have agreed to loan money to businesses that need it to pay employees during the strike.
Oh FUCK, oh SHIT! Does this mean that Jewish Bankers and even possibly… *drum roll* … GEORGE SOROS are actually about try and cause a government to fall?!?!?
You know you fucked up when corporations, banks, and the working class have joined forces. That is a legit sign of end times for your country because it has gone way too far down the fascist corruption hole.
We found a jewish conspiracy to control the government. Of course it is to stop a fascist coup of right wing corruption, but it would seem to be a majority of jewish owned people in a jewish state so break out the rothchild space lasers. This is sort of like how we find election crimes here in the US are always committed by the corrupt right.
Longish read but good summary. https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/25/middleeast/israel-judiciary-netanyahu-explainer-intl/index.html
Interesting thread: https://twitter.com/mkoplow/status/1640141318142697472 TLDR: Bibi might play for time and hope opposition stumbles while eventually be willing to give up override (Knesset can overturn Supreme Court rulings) in order to secure ability to stack court.
3:15 am. Israel's National Student and Youth Council announces its joining tomorrow's general strike. "Stop the legislation." No school. https://twitter.com/ntarnopolsky/status/1640146002454671360 High school students are joining the university students in strikes.
Checking out Haaretz and I just have to say how much it fills me with pride that America is the beacon showing the way for other democracies. https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news...t-judges/00000187-1ced-d7c4-ab8f-fcefea5a0000
'The country won't remain silent until all dictatorship laws have been abolished completely,' the leaders of the protest stated on Monday morning, a few hours ahead of the main protest in Jerusalem A few hours before the demonstration expected to take place at the Knesset at 2P.M. on Monday, the leaders of the protests against the judicial coup announced: "The country won't remain silent until all dictatorship laws have been abolished completely. It is our policy not to accept compromises that would undermine the Supreme Court's independence and supremacy." https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news...000187-1c81-d4ca-afff-1d89ee5b0000#2043489140 Protesters are at least saying they won’t stop for a ‘pause’.
PM Netanyahu's lawyer to stop representing him if judicial reform passes https://m.jpost.com/breaking-news/article-735537
I'm guessing a whole lotta Israelis have just joined the ACAB club. Police water cannon strike down protesters in Israel
I thought criticizing nentinyahu meant i was anti-semetic? That is what the christian trumpistas told me. Saying he is corrupt is claiming there is a jewish cabal controlling the world, and pointing out his association with the american terrorists means I am being anti-semetic because I am accusing them of participating in jewish corruption. Oh wait, that is stupid. Maybe @T.R , @Uncle Albert , and @Bill Carson should get a less stupid line.
It’s unfortunate that the Israeli Supreme Court has become the backstop against the legislative excesses of the conservatives. The lack of a strong left leaning coalition means there is little hope in Parliament. Netanyahu is also doing this to save his own skin and legacy. Don’t like being held to laws and standards? Just change the laws and standards.
Remember the Israeli Minister that went to prison for Human Rights Violations? He initially said he would leave the government (causing new elections) if these reforms were delayed. But Netenyahi is basically a smart Kevin McCarthy. He’s willing to give away anything in order to gain and keep power. So now we have: Netanyahu ended up ensuring Ben-Gvir's approval after pledging that the cabinet in its coming meeting on Sunday would approve the transfer of Israel's National Guard to Ben-Gvir's ministry. https://m.jpost.com/israel-news/politics-and-diplomacy/live-updates-735544
How much do you wanna bet that an attack on Iran 'before they build too many nuclear weapons' is coming in the not too distant future. Gotta wag the dog.
This is what happens when you don't have a constitution that guarantees the separation of powers, and parliament can do whatever it likes. *cough*God Save the King*cough*
He backed down after the banks and main business leaders weighed in behind a general strike. Fucking hell.
Wagging the dog? https://twitter.com/treaschest/status/1642292506514604034?s=46&t=iYW3foyqIA6Tn8VWwn3nwQ
Ex-senior Netanyahu staffer pictured at anti-judicial overhaul rally in Tel Aviv That's his former Chief of Staff, BTW.
Now, they've raided the Al Aqsa mosque and have started beating people who were worshipping there. https://twitter.com/mfaisal8042/status/1643550286047490048?s=20 Really not a good look, guys.
I want confirmation that that's actually Al-Aqsa mosque, but it wouldn't surprise me if Netenyahu was trying to cause another intifada to try to provide a common enemy to kill the dissent.
Y'know, the fact that there's a huge and active mosque in the middle of Jerusalem -- contrast that with the number of synagogues in Saudi Arabia -- is a good illustration of why it's good for Israel to have Western support. But still, fuck Netanyahu in the ear.
