Save for efforts like Goodfellas and Casino, it remains one of the very best Mafia movies in my opinion. I think the only reason that it gets a raw deal is because it is noticeably weaker than the first two when you watch them in sequence and the absence of Robert Duvall is keenly felt viewing it that way as well. But Godfather I & II are to crime & mob movies what Superman The Movie was to comicbook films or Star Wars was to sci-fi. A cinematic benchmark that films would have to live up to for years to come. Having to try to follow that, and do so 15 years later, was always going to be a monumental task.

My son has Godfather III - I just can't get into it. That said Sophia Coppola was distracted because SHE WANTS ME!
Can you blame her? That's why Winona Ryder couldn't hang - she couldn't get her mind off me. It happens all the time, it's a cross I must bear.

    Grand Budapest Hotel. Solid A.

Ralph Fiennes deserves an oscar nomination for his performance in my humble opinion.

"We're the Millers", I'd give it an 7.5/10. It was pretty funny, some of it was kind of stupid but overall a good laugh. One the funniest lines was "Fuck off, real life Flanders!"

Last film I saw was X-Men DOFP, I enjoyed it quite a bit, and would rate it 8/10.

Going to see Dawn of the POTA tonight, and will be seeing GotG on Saturday.

Just watched Bronson with Tom Hardy. Holy fuck that was good. I've only just started watching Nicolas Winding Refn's films, the first of which was Valhalla Rising which was also fantastic. Artistic, but with balls. The same goes for Bronson with the extreme violence and manic glee of Tom Hardy's performance, which is the best of his career to date (remember him in Star Trek Nemisis?).

I thought the opening of Valhalla Rising was exceptional, but it became more and more opaque and weird as it went on. Pity.

Refn is a talented director, but that does seem to be his thing.

The Dancer Upstairs. Terror plot in a generic Latin American country, based loosely on Peru's Shining Path rebels.

The Good: Gritty and credible, lots of subplots and red herrings and even a few "Did not see that coming." Oh, and Javier Bardem as the underpaid and beleaguered cop infatuated with the dancer in question even though he's risking everything trying to get closer to her. Did I mention Javier Bardem? Did I mention the skinny-dipping in the river scene?

The Bad: The key plot point was pretty much lying right out in the open midway through the film.

watched Joss Weadon's take on "Much Ado About Nothing" last time and, laying aside the usual adjustment one has to make to seeing a modern setting contrasted against Shakespearean dialogue, found it very well done. None of the actors worrying over their head, and all found a way to deliver their lines with an acting nuance that made them accessible. Certain scenes jump out nicely and the comic moments play as they should. The cinematography is lovely, and even more impressive when you realize how it was made and where. 8/10, about as well as you can do this sort of thing.

So, Captain America: Winter Soldier. What's the big deal? Watched it, thoroughly entertained, but not getting the pure adulation. Best Superhero movie? No way! Best thriller/conspiracy movie? Not a chance. I can only put it down to the audience getting so used to Transformers style "cumshot scene" movies that something that has a shred of plot and intelligence seems like a masterpiece. Burt really, beyond it's certainly unquestionable entertainment value, I didn't see what was standout about it.

Because, at least for me, it was Cap being Cap the way Superman was Superman in the Chris Reeve movie. It was Captain America done absolutely right. Cap does what's right, what needs doing, and is such a natural leader and inspiration that by the third act even Nick freakin' Fury was deferring to him.

Not a movie, I know, but I just finished the first season of Broadchurch.

Oh, my, yes, in every respect. Scripting, casting, direction, performances, cinematrography - yes, yes, yes, yes. Maybe a little heavy-handed on the music, but otherwise oh, my, yes.

Location sites - wow, gorgeous. O, to be in England -!

Nice to see Tennant playing a grown-up (though he also did a bang-up job in The Politician's Husband.) Scots accent a bit hard to understand sometimes (is that what he sounds like IRL?), but worth rewinding and listening again. What El Chup said about Olivia Colman in another thread is true a thousand-fold here. Not a weak sister in the rest of the cast, either.

    9.5/10

How the hell are they possibly going to follow this with a second season?

I held it to the standard of the Marvel movies. Yes, it had a plot, fleshed out the universe, and wasn't a MacGuffin Chase. What's not to like?

    "Martyrs"

I am not into torture porn, I don't enjoy watching people screaming in agony for two hours. When it comes to horror movies, I love good oldfashioned occult horror. But this French flick was recommended to me, and so I gave it a try. I expected a stupid, sadistic gorefest à la "Hostel".

"Martyrs" left me rather confused, and I admit, a little bit shattered. It is not a movie one can "enjoy". Of course there is lots of gore in it, which bores me to death after a few minutes in most cases. Wanna see real horror? Go watch a documentary about the Khmer Rouge or something... Torture porn is so stupid... But this movie has interesting plot twists and a very sinister vibe.

    HUGE Spoiler:
    .
    .
    .
A cult tortures people until they "ascend", hoping to get information about the afterlife from them just before the victims die. These sickos try to turn their victims into martyrs, a.k.a. "witnesses". In the end, it's not clear if the spectator is the "martyr" himself... This is just the ending of the movie, many things happen beforehands.
    .
    .
    .

I really don't know how to rate this movie. I can't decide if the backstory is just a ridiculous excuse for all the violence and torture, or a brillant play with the expectations of the spectator who wants to see people suffer, showing him the mirror in the end and telling him: "So you enjoy watching people getting shot, stabbed and tortured, eh? What a sicko you are! You are not a human being. You are filth. We all are. There is no hope." But this is just my interpretation.

" I can't decide if "Martyrs" is total crap or a masterpiece... It's nothing in between, that's for sure! ;)

These damned French... They can make really disturbing movies. It is not the violence which makes this movie disturbing. Although it's VERY brutal and bloody and not for the faint of the heart. The violence shown is often almost unbearable. However.... There is something "evil" about this movie which I haven't figured out yet.

I will watch it again and I recommend it, because it IS an interesting and intense movie and completely different from childish crap like "Saw" or "Hostel".

Sorry for all the editing. The movie had quite an impact on me. I could write on and on... ;)

    13 Sins... I give it a 7.5 out 10.

The main character is contacted to complete 13 challenges, each of which becomes increasingly more criminal and violent in order to win larger and larger amounts of money. As he completes each one, he starts to become more and more detached. At the same time, a local police detective is on his trail and getting closer to finding out who he is.

I liked how each challenge became more violent and it also had some gore in it as well.

Tried to watch "Martyrs" again. Stopped after to thirds, was too shaken to endure the last third one more time. A terror movie. Psychological murder. It kills your soul. A masterpiece which I will NEVER watch again. "Grotesque" is a Disney movie compared to the soulcrushing madness which is "Martyrs". The only movie I know which has the same message as "Martyrs" (despair, nihilism, the death of hope...) is "Antichrist" by Lars von Trier, although it's a completely different genre. "Antichrist" is the other masterpiece which I will never watch again...

    10/10

Watched the first part of "How to train a Dragon" for recovery. Loved it! Can't wait to see part two on the big screen this weekend.

I didn't say I disliked it. I simply said I didn't see it as the masterpiece some have made out (especially considering some of the very silly plot holes it has). Just a good popcorn flick Nothing more.

I just got back from seeing Into The Storm. Fast paced family friendly entertainment. No sex, very little cursing, just putting a human face on devastating weather. Somewhat derivative, but there's only so much you can tweak the disaster movie formula. The brunette from The Walking Dead (Rick's wife) stars in it. I would run my EF-5 through her field in a New York Minute, if you get my drift.

Survey says: three out of five stars.

Dario Argento's Dracula. Almost a throwback to Hammer style, but the movie doesn't have the heart that the Hammer flicks did. Unrated, but lots of boobs, half of 'em from Asia Argento. Rutger Hauer does an OK job as Van Helsing, but I can't see me getting this one off of shelf very often. And now for the Drive-in review: Barn ardvarking, Shovel-Fu, Ear-Fu, Giant Praying Mantis-Fu, Four breasts (with encores) at least ten dead bodies, one severed head, one split head, four Dracula transformations.

My score, :moo: :moo: out of five.
