But all the Northern states still fly the same flag they flew when they wouldn't let blacks live in white neighborhoods or get union jobs.
True. But as I said earlier, the U.S. flag stands for the totality of this country -- which has evolved a lot over time, and which, on the whole, has a lot more good than bad. The Confederate flag, because its nation no longer exists, basically stands for the last major principle espoused by that country -- which was the right to own people. It's like the difference between the flag of Germany and the flag of the Third Reich.
IMO if state/government buildings don't want to (or do want to) display a reb flag they have that right - it's their property to manage. Technically they represent the people, but by that rationale I should be able to have a picnic on the Whitehouse lawn - Obama doesn't own the place! But I'm guessing his security would not share my viewpoint. Nobody gives a real shit about government anyway - it's not like we rely on them for moral guidance or leadership. If private citizens want to display it 24/7 anywhere and everywhere I'm all for it - it's their Constitutional right. They can display a Nazi flag or Black Panther flag or whatever. This was the US last time I checked, land of liberty. We don't have to like it, we just have to accept and tolerate it.
Does any other country have this situation? Is there an area of England that still flies Cromwell's banner and cries "The Roundheads shall rise again!"?
Damn straight, and it better stay that way. Now is it silly for national parks and monuments (civil war historical museums) to not sell anything depicting a rebel flag? Fucking A Twitty yes it is, but we expect silly knee-jerk PC shit from our government. That said private companies can sell all the confederate merchandise they want. Dixie Outfitters is probably loving the rebel flag purge bandwagon coming to town.
Yes, they are. Daily Mail story Black Mississippi Confederate flag supporter dies after rally when 'car full of jeering African American men forced him off the road' Anthony Hervey, 49, was chased by a group of men while driving home from an Alabama flag rally when the car flipped Rest In Peace
Ironically, he went off the plantation (of Democrat/liberal dogma) by supporting the people that kept his ancestors on the plantation. What an interesting turn of events. Thank goodness his "brothers" displayed tolerance and compassion for his differing viewpoint. Oh wait, they did what? Well at least the people who killed him weren't white (or displayed symbols of hate) or we'd never hear the end of it. BTW if Obama had a son, he'd look like the driver of the car that ran Anthony off the road.
Definitely a class act all the way. Watch him get vilified as a result, by classless fucks like the ones that ran the guy off the road.
Don't worry. I'm sure the Department of Justice is investigating it as an improper lane change or failure to yield.
I'm watching a History Channel show and thought this was interesting: when the slave trade was getting started the Portuguese needed them for sugar plantations. Turns out there was an African queen who sold fellow blacks that she had captured to the Portuguese! And it's interesting that free blacks in the US owned thousands of black slaves! Of course the white economic system was 100 percent at fault for forcing blacks to get rich enslaving other blacks.
Okay, and? Doesn't change the fact that we were not only the last major country to eliminate the practice but actually went to war to keep it in place. And for no reason, since Lincoln wasn't gonna change the status quo.
It's cute the way they think thugs committing an assault makes it illegal for private citizens to display the racist banner.
By the 1920's even the KKK had stopped using the Confederate flag and used the American flag to emphasize "Americanness", meaning whiteness. By the early 1950's the Confederate flag was hardly seen any where but then with the SCotUS killing segregation suddenly the flag started popping up at right wing events among pro-segregationists. By the early 1960's the civil rights movement was in full swing and shitty southern states controlled by pro-segregationists started putting Confederate flags and monuments on public buildings as an overt appeal to white supremacy and being anti-civil rights. For the last 60 years that is all the Confederate flag has ever stood for and nothing else. The people who fly it know that though most of them are like Muad and will try to lie about it and rewrite history. Their lies don't fool anyone with a knowledge of history.
I still think they should ask Fritz Hollings at the Huffington Post about how he feels watching an Indian Republican woman pull down the flag that he put up.
The break down was conservatives were anti-civil rights and pro-segregation but you know that, everyone knows that. Then you whine that blacks won't vote for conservatives and pretend not to know why.
Oh that Indian Republican woman. I thought you meant Bree Newsome. But @gturner, Haley didn't take it down. The State House and Senate did.
Uh, no. The conservative Republican Southerners were against segregation and wanted to hire blacks. Almost none of the pro-segregation Democrats even lost their positions in the House and Senate. Fritz Hollings, who raised the Confederate flag over the South Carolina capitol, became a South Carolina senator and stayed in that office until 2005. Robert Byrd, Grand Kleagle of the KKK who filibustered the 1964 Civil Rights Bill for 14 hours, stayed in office as a Democrat from 1952 until 2010.
Its amazing the amount of propaganda the Southerners put into this. I've recently heard the claim that the South was planning to free the slaves within 20 years. Remember when Maud trotted that one out back in the day. Problem was, the Confederate Constitution made that illegal - Article I, Section 9, Clause 4: (4) No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law denying or impairing the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed. SOOOO much vested in the lies and BS of the 'Lost Cause.' Its like they think that is the only thing that makes a Southerner a Southerner. Which is pretty fucking pathetic.
What makes a southerner a southerner is laughing at all the transplanted Yankees who bitch about how things are done up north! Yet the north-to-south migration is much more frequent than the other way around. The south has definitely risen again! "Living well is the best revenge" and all that.
Overpopulation does that. And the first thing the Yankees laugh at is the education - which is also, really, really sad. Fixing that would go a long way towards catching the South back up. Another funny thing is Southerners bragging about manufacturing jobs. Hey, that's great. Of course, we aren't in the Industrial Era any more - that started 250 years ago. We are in the Information Age now - that's where the good jobs are, that's where the megacompanies are making billions, and once again, the South is behind on that.
So.....those great Yankee educations go to shit when people cross the Mason Dixon line or what? Read and be...educated about the subject. http://www.forbes.com/sites/joelkotkin/2013/01/31/how-the-south-will-rise-to-power-again/
