Butterfly effect. Either that or Sulu was always bisexual.

How does an alternate timeline affect birth dates or the color of Vulcan's sky? How does it make the Kelvin fit in so well with everything in its own universe and not with anything from the Prime universe? Because it's a reboot, so it doesn't matter.

You forgot, it also changed Khan's race even though he was frozen in space already.

Dunno. You should ask the producers of Deep Space Nine, seeing that they did it first.

This is much ado about nothing. I doubt this tidbit will even get more than a ten second mention with Sulu showing a picture of his partner/husband and their child and can be easily ignored. Frankly, I'll take that over the grating arguments that Spock and Uruha had in the middle of the mission in the last film. I mean, you date a Vulcan and you're shocked he doesn't wear his heart on his sleeve....come on.

I'm still hoping for Spock and Kirk to bang next reboot, though.

On the one hand, if the intent of this decision is to honor a gay icon like George Takei, then why wouldn't you respect his wishes when he says he doesn't want Sulu changed and he doesn't think Sulu is gay?

On the other hand, I'm not sure why Takei is invoking Gene Roddenberry. I don't think he gave two shits about Sulu. In the entire original series the only thing we ever learned about Sulu was that he liked fencing. He never had a relationship with anyone on the show and we never really learned anything about him until Star Trek IV. We didn't even get the guy's first name until Star Trek VI!

Roddenberry never developed any kind of backstory for Sulu as far as I can tell, so the writers of Beyond really wouldn't be breaking any established tradition in this case. We don't know that he wasn't gay in the Prime-verse, all we have is Takei's word on it.

That's what makes his objection so bizarre. Gene didn't give Sulu more than a one sentence bio (mathematics genius botanist flies the ship, apparently likes fencing, looks Japanese, last name bit of an insult to Japanese language). John Cho, who plays Sulu in the new films, loves this idea. Quinto, who is very gay and plays a (apparently) straight Vulcan thinks this is a wonderful idea, and the LGBT community seems to think it's at least an interesting and neat idea to explore. So what is George's hangup? Because Gene wouldn't have done it? Gene Roddenberry had many chances to create a specifically gay character, and never did. Towards the end of his life he regretted that, but saying Gene wouldn't have done it this way is silly, and also irrelevant since Gene has been dead 25 years.

It changed future time travel adventures, including at least Picard's trip to the frakking creation of all life on Earth. There is a bunch of things wrong with JJ Trek, but this doesn't make the list.

Heh, the funny thing about that is how O'Brien flies the ship marries the staff botanist.

Same way it changed a lot of other incomprehensible stuff, like Checkov's age and Spock's being down with having a girlfriend and starships being built on the ground for no sane reason, or Khan Noonian Singh being a goddamed ENGLISHMAN even though he was already asleep on the Botany Bay before the Kelvin Incident.

Besides, with respect to Takei, there's no canon evidence the SuluPrime WAS straight/closeted and as for what Gene intended, I sure hope George isn't just now noticing that nothing at all in the NuVerse looks like what Gene intended (and everything Gene intended ain't a good idea either, but that's a different conversation)

In regards to what "Gene wanted", IIRC as early as the first season of TNG Roddenberry was on record saying there "should be" a gay character in Star Trek or at least gay characters in the background.

But chances are Roddenberry would never have made that change himself.

Why? Roddenberry when it came to modern Star Trek was always very wary of anything edgy or controversial that he thought might damage the franchise in some way.

I seem to recall a few instances where Sulu showed preference for women mostly in the movies. TMP and TFF come to mind as does the fact that in Generations we find out he has a daughter serving on the Enterprise B.

It would make more sense to bring a new character on the bridge.

While I'm no fan of homosexuality or political correctness in Star Trek, I think I can honestly say that in my view Sulu's orientation is the least of the problems with Abramstrek.

there wasn't any romantic lusting in TFF that I recall, and at most in TMP he might have made eyes over the sex-machine race putting someone on board...maybe...but that could be attributed to the nature of Deltans.

Nothing on screen explains his having a daughter - gay NuSulu has a daughter too.

    Elaborate?

In all fairness, that kind of thing is pretty much Hollywood. Hell on Days of Their Lives now one of the main characters is supposed to be Mexican. But he's played by an Italian.

I think nowadays in Hollywood the only thing that will get producers in trouble is having a white actor play a black character by having him "painted down"(use your imagination).

IIRC, back when The Wrath of Khan was made the producers got into trouble for reportedly getting a white stuntman "painted down" so they could use him to portray the character of Clark Terrell in a brief scene.

To me, J.J. Abrams obsession with making aliens with weirdly tattooed faces on screen is no different from the creative bankruptcy of Rick Berman and his "aliens with wrinkled forehead" obsessions.

Times have changed. Ten, fifteen, twenty years ago, I'd have been counting the days until a new ST movie was released, and I'd know all about it before it was released.

By now, I'm pretty turned off the whole thing, and don't care very much. But this has the interesting side-effect that I'll be going in completely spoiler free. So it could surprise me. :)
