The US national anthem is quite mild compared to others.

Algeria: "We swear by the lightning that destroys, By the streams of generous blood being shed"

"When we spoke, none listened to us, So we have taken the noise of gunpowder as our rhythm, And the sound of machine guns as our melody"

Italy: "Mercenary swords, they're feeble reeds. The Austrian eagle has already lost its plumes. The blood of Italy and the Polish blood it drank, along with the Cossack. But it burned its heart."

France: "The bloody flag is raised, the bloody flag is raised."

"Do you hear in the countryside, the roar of these savage soldiers, they come right into our arms, to cut the throats of your sons!"

    Grab your weapons, citizens!
    Form your batallions!
Let us march! Let us march!
    May impure blood
    Water our fields!

Mexico: ''War, war without quarter to any who dare
to tarnish the coats of arms of the country!
War, war! Let the national banners
be soaked in waves of blood.''

''O, Fatherland, ere your children, defenseless
bend their neck beneath the yoke,
may your fields be watered with blood,
may their foot be printed in blood.''

I think Kaepernick made a huge mistake with this whole thing and I would've gone about it differently if I were him... But I'll never understand the particularly visceral reaction to his refusal to acknowledge a symbol. It baffles me that the ones who claim to value freedom of expression the most are the ones most opposed to this particular freedom. People fought and died for Kaepernick's right to protest so therefore he shouldn't protest...!??!??

It's stupid to me too, and I say this as having served in the military.

Like I said earlier, the vast majority of military do not sign up or stay in out of a sense of patriotism and their shrill warbling grates worse than listening to Fran Dresher singing "The Song that Doesn't End." :brood:

But would Kaepernick salute the ISIS flag?

    Didn't he convert to Islam?

Because the kind of patriotism she is referring to is based on symbolism, not a true understanding of democracy and the principles on which the US was originally founded.

Too many Americans wave the flag and throw around words like "liberty" and "freedom" without having a damned clue what they mean.

It is a little interesting that when Tim Tebow prayed after a touchdown he was told playing in the nfl as an employment type situation and such displays were not fitting for that location. How is this different?

I had as much problem with Tebow doing his thing as I do with Kaepernick doing his, which is to say none at all.

The NFL did though which seems to suggest a bit of bias on their part.

Of course they have a bias. Football is God's favorite game. It's why they play it on Sunday.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the issue with Tebow that his prayer routine interrupted and delayed the game?

As did certain other players dancing in the end zone after scoring a touchdown. IIRC, they got fined for such things.

If the league had a problem with it, it may have had something to do with him kneeling in the endzone after a touchdown. They still allow player celebrations in the endzone after a score but they're not allowed to choreograph them with other players or "go to the ground" as part of the celebration. :dayton:

End zone celebrations were banned largely because they were causing fights during games

ISTR one player getting dinged for doing a celebration that lasted more than a minute or so. Of course, players have also gotten fined for missing a game because their wife was giving birth at the time.

Yeah, anything that's seen as excessive or delaying the game will draw a penalty.

And Dayton's wrong. Celebrations aren't banned, they're just limited.
