I am talking about 90% of the claims of misogyny made during gamergate not 90% of people who actually know what misogyny means and definitely not 90% of the population. We are talking about a very thin slice of people who brlieve simply disagreeing with them is evidence of a supposed hatred of all women.

You'll have to buy "Harry Hembock Regurgitations", to find out.

As long as people willingly give it to him then there is no problem, right? Nothing to complain about here. :)

I thought your frowning and head shaking signified something. Any way, several people used that argument on Sarkeesians kickster and I have to agree; as long as someone is willing to fork over the cash then I guess it is ok. That doesn't mean people can't bitch about it, of course, with their free speech and all.

Buy me 170,000 in games, and I'll decipher that pesky smiley with deconstructionist theorums from the 1970's.

Oh, come on! Not that many of you bought the "Saddam has WMD" myth.

And once again the linguist for whom English is a (second, third, fifth?) language will school the Dumbass Muricans for whom English as a First Language continues to be a struggle.

Now that the semantic debate has escalated, I feel like I should have an opinion in order to maintain my Word Nerd credentials, but I've kind of lost track of what the argument is about.

The argument, as I see it, is between a strange alliance of the Four Horsemen of the First Church of the Almighty Gaamz and everyone else, with evenflow being all lofty in the interstices.

Never before have we seen such vehemence from these Four – not about politics, not even about mainstream religion – but about their abject terror that any breath of criticism of the Church will end up in jihad and “They’re takin’ away ur Gaamz!”

The Chuck Heston/NRA rhetoric early on should have been the first clue but, considering who it was coming from, we were caught off-guard.

There's more, but I'll watch them shriek and clutch their, erm, controllers over this for now.

No, about what the word ACTUALLY means. The fact they are ignorant of this doesn't change that fact. If that same majority decided that 2 + 2 = 5 would you be cool with that?

Based on his advanced scholarship and experience, T.R will now explain to us peasants what the word actually means.

Or just ignore anyone who doesn't consider him a greater authority than anyone else here.

Would I feel somewhat cold? If the same greatness cut off such a calculation? Because the deed by which they do not recognise something doesn't change what a word IN ACTION means?

That gibberish, btw, is what you get when you insist that each word you used mean what its etymology indicates. Words mean what the lingual community think they mean; there is no "actual" meaning behind it to correct them.

This is hilarious. You guys keep saying this, but you won't find a single statement in this thread to match your narrative. Nobody her has said that some means all. Not one of us. The virulence of reaction to the statement that some are scum, might indicate something about the reactionaries in this thread, but don't try to put that on the people who have observed that some gamers are scum, that some games represent misogynist attitudes.

Do you understand how language works? Outside of France, there are no high priests to rule on meaning. Meaning is what the users determine it to be. Majority convention actually matters, not your own personal point of view.

I'm not a fan of Palin, I just thought it was an interesting take, especially coming from a liberal historian. And it coincides with the easily offended neo Victorian Puritanism so prevalent in today's liberalism. That's an attitude that goes beyond Palin, (who is yesterday's news) and is applicable across a range of issues.

Eh, maybe, but nobody I know talks the way the folks in that article do, except maybe sometimes in a joking fashion. I'd need to see some more evidence of this neo-Victorian liberalism.
