The textbook dictionary definition is the standard for words and meaning. We don't get to create new meanings based on some arbitrary groups misuse of a word.

I used to think that way too.

Until I met a bunch of linguists who laughed at the concept. They say work on dictionaries is consistently given to the less intelligent members of their communities as make work - something to keep the kids busy who aren't going to go on and do something meaningful.

Language is interpretive - just because some old dude set down rules in 1727 as to what x and y mean doesn't mean those things are the same, or even relevent, in 2014.

However, it isn't even necessary to point any of that out in this case, because T.R. & Co. were trying to say that the word has only one of the meanings listed in the dictionary, and cannot instead mean any of the others, because everybody knows this is so, even though to their chagrin, everybody is misusing the word.
