I won't pretend that I've read the posts in this thread. I have not. But, I'm going to say something here because I can't say it on Facebook.

I'm glad Governor Bentley removed the flags from the Confederate Memorial at the Capitol. I have none, zero heartburn over one of the three Confederate National Flags being flown over cemeteries and memorials. But, outside of re-enactments, museums, and other appropriate venues the Battle Flag has no place in modern society.

I had four members of my family fight in Law's Alabama Brigade (48th Alabama Infantry Regiment) at both Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and others. I feel comfortable saying that, that flag represents slavery and hate. Article I, Section 9 of the Confederate Constitution deals with slavery. It was important to them. The Civil War was about State's Rights. The right of the States to let one subset of humanity own another subset of humanity as property. The end. Full stop. You have zero moral high ground in that argument. Now, again, I have zero problem with one of the National Flags flying over a cemetery or memorial. To the best of my knowledge, the first national flag, the "Stars and Bars" flies over the Confederate Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. But, outside of historians, both amateur and professional, I feel relatively comfortable assuming anyone wearing anything with a battle flag on it is a racist to one degree or another.

We have an Confederate graveyard right here on Fort Gordon. When the government bought the land all the locals who lived there retained rights to their graveyards. One of them is reserved for those who fought for the South (duh!) and it's a very interesting/historic place. Most people drive right by because it looks from a distance like every other graveyard of which we have about 30 or so.

rebel.jpg HOLY SHIT! I thought Walmart was jumping all over the "no confederate" embargo. Today I'm in Walmart on the way home and what pops out at me? Sam Adams REBEL IPA. And it's red and white. Holy shit Walmart, what is wrong with you? No, I didn't buy it - I'm getting burned out on the IPA thing - it's like drinking a pine cone!
That said I saw this HOT Latina shopping and she kind of busted me looking at her while she was examining her shopping list. She looked up and gave me that flirty "I know you are checking me out" smirk/smile but trust me, those long brown legs were driving me crazy! And thick black hair halfway down her back.....damn! Then a few minutes later the checkout clerk said I looked way younger than I was after seeing my birth-date on my ID. How cool is that? Okay, getting off track here. Seriously, Latinas and black chicks love my blue eyes - maybe because they don't see a lot of them? Who knows, but I'm not bitching about it that's for sure.
That half black-half Pacific island woman (someone said she's Panamanian) who works down the hall is a total sweetie pie I do know that! I'd be all into that in a minute.

How about going from cutting taxes in 1981 to raising them in 1982? (Not to mention actually increasing the tax burden of lower- and middle-income families during his time in office.)

IIRC, Reagan was an advocate of cutting income taxes, not simply taxes in general.

Also much of the increasing tax burden was in Social Security taxes as part of the bipartisan plan to fix the SS funding problem. Note that Reagan in a bipartisan gesture to Tip O'Neill allowed the Democrats to take the lead in the SS fix. The big tax increase was largely their doing.

Impossible! They must all be racists/KKK members/Republicans. They no doubt whipped those two black backup singers if they missed a note.

Where is any part of the rebel flag in that design? Using red and white in no way is similar to the con federate flag. It is more close to canadia patriotism than patriotism of the south.

Yeah, southern rebels are not the only ones who rebel. I was pretty sure you were smart enough to know that the word rebel does not exclusively refer to the racists who like the confederacy. Thank you for telling me I overestimated your intelligence yet again. You are right, I gotta learn you are dumb.

Nothing wrong with Walmart or the Boston Beer Co. You are the problem. They use the rebel symbolism for two reasons, neither of which have anything to do with the South.
    1. Sam Adams, the historical figure, was a rebel (in revolutionary times).
    2. The brewer self styles as a rebel against mass market, industrial alt-grain brewers.

I was being sarcastic, joking about how Walmart is purguing itself of all things condfederate. Yes I know the difference bewtween a rebel and a southern confederate. James Dean did not star in "Confederate Without A Cause."

Dude I was being a smart-ass. I am well aware of rebel versus confederate - I was joking about the Walmart confederate reaction. Speaking of I feel they should purge themselves of all Duck Dynasty merchandise. This has nothing to do with the shooting, I just can't stand DD and am sick of seeing their faces and hearing about them. On a related note, everyone who wears hunting camo as a fashion statement should form a line to step up and be bitch slapped. I'm guessing (hoping) I will get zero argument from anyone on WF over that.

So last weekend, I drove by an old graveyard and there was a crowd there. It turns out that they were dedicating a part that had Confederate veterans as a memorial. There were several Confederate battle flags and some re-enactors in uniform. I didn't think too much of it at the time other than the unfortunate timing.

Anyway, it just occurred to me. This is North Carolina, not Virginia. Same thing for all the memorials I've seen in Tennessee flying the flag. Why do we honor so many Confederate soldiers by displaying a flag that the vast majority of them never fought under?

Maybe it's just for simplicity's sake. There were several different flags and versions so I think just picking one of them as a general symbol is about as close as they are going to get but serves their purpose.

You have to be careful with that argument though because most of them did fight under the aptly named "Battle Flag." Each unit from Company size through Corps size had it's own identifying flag for the troops to center on. Early on, yes, it was the flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. But, by the end of the war, it had promulgated to the rest of the armed forces. General Joseph E. Johnston changed the flags for the Army of Tennessee to that pattern in December of 1863. The vast majority of late war examples are exactly what you expect.

So, let's see how much momentum this movement has...
There are now more things happening, like wanting to rename streets and schools so they aren't named after Confederate Generals...
Statues an monuments should probably looked at on a case-by-case basis, some might need to be (re-)moved, others might just need some kind of sign with more background information...

It's easy to go too far with this kind of thing. Many of the false arguments made to support the flag (which is generally displayed for racist reasons) are not so false when it comes to statues, streets, and other memorials that honor specific individuals. I would hope that there aren't many examples of, say, tributes for the Andersonville commander. But most memorial displays are simply remembering a local man who died fighting. Individuals had many reasons to join the cause, not all of them made that choice specifically to support slavery. The Confederacy as an institution was rotten to the core, but the men and women who made up its citizenry were not all bad people.

So.....the Jefferson Davis highway across the river from me in South Carolina might be on the chopping block? I hope not, half the roads already have about a dozen different names in The South.

Okay, now it's starting to get silly to the extreme. Somebody (apparently) thinks Walmart shouldn't sell guns. :dayton: let's slow this whole train down. Everybody's giving up anything Confederate - got it. Let's just focus on that shall we? BTW I had no idea Walmart didn't sell handguns because they sell handgun ammo! :calli: I might be wrong, but are there any rifles chambered for 115 grain 9 mil Luger rounds? :calli:
Regardless, things are starting to get knee-jerk stupid. Luckily Walmart is telling anybody considering this to pound sand.
