Yeah, I'm sure a 1:30 min. teaser trailer will be representative of a 2 hour movie.

It had some action. It also had quite a lot of character moments, and philosophical debate. It was not dominated by ADHD high-wire stunt action.

This ADHD-crap is getting old now. It was already boring in 2009.

Then why do they keep making ugly, noisy movies where the camera can't stay still, where the frame is saturated with meaningless CGI and where there's a cut every 0.05 seconds?

I'm surprised they didn't have an underwear clad blond for the horny 14 year old demographic.

Wasn't that the sole reason for Dr. Marcus in "Into Darkness"? Bibi Besch probably rolled over in her grave....

I have to say I agree with @Dayton3 in this thread almost 100%. Great observations.

And from the annals of when Wordforge was done via scrolls and pigeon...

We have Riker with jazz, plenty of classical tunes... Tastes vary, and the culturally conservative snobbery you, @Dan Leach and @RickDeckard have on display is little other than the kind of thing I'd expect more of chinless Etonian wonders.

As for the clip, well, not much to go on, buuuut:

    The Good:
Much more of a TOS 'feel' to it. As to if that'll transfer to whole movie is another thing.
The Hellboy-esque "This is where the frontier pushes back." Exploring is always going to come with consequences as well as wonder, and so far only DS9 explored that, with TNG dipping it's toes in a little.
The attack isn't pew-pew-pew weaponry, makes for a change and somewhat different tactics than reversing the shield polarity I hope.

    The Bad:
Motorbikes. Hmmm. A little too close Picard twatting about in NEM for me.

    The Ugly:
    Nothing, so far.

Is it any coincidence that once old Spock isn't around to tell them everything that's about to happen, young captain fancy pants gets his ship blowed up?

So there was nothing in the trailer that suggested there will be any traditional space battles.

    Dayton will hate it.

It says that there's a reason the average age of Navy captains is mid to late 40's. Skipping that 20 years of experience means there's a glorified ensign in charge of an entire warship. After he graduated, Kirk might have made lieutenant jg in two years and lieutenant in four.

When I watch a television show or movie about firefighters, then I fully expect to see some damn fires.

Eh, maybe. But I really, really doubt it. Even if you allow that the Beastie Boys have anything like Mozart's talent, they're much more anchored to their time and place. Their "music" has little aesthetic quality, appeals mainly to crass and baser instincts, and says very little of interest about the world or the human condition. Its main virtue is that it provides the right kind of background noise for raucous parties. I suspect that much of the enduring fondness for it comes from memories associated with the music, and not the music itself.

Anyway, because history provides examples of genius being overlooked in its own time, that does not mean that any old thing should be revered as a potential future example of genius. True, I don't know what will be considered genius in years to come. But I can provide and consider arguments about why something will or won't be.
I suppose you can't expect a sci-fi show/movie to invent 300 years worth of better popular music. But I'd be sad to hear that in the 23rd Century, people still listen to the Beastie Boys because 50 million better things haven't come along.

It's probably about as out of place as having the pilots in Top Gun drinking and getting rowdy to a barbershop quartet.

I've heard of navy pilots doing far, far worse than that though that was more at the annual Tailhook Association Convention than at Top Gun.

I thought about the most unrealistic thing in Top Gun was the pilots and radar intercept officers having enough free time to hang out on the beach and play volleyball. I've read that the program is much like a boot camp. Exhausting with no free time.

Well, now the radar intercept officers have lots of free time because most F-18's don't have any place for them to sit.

I don't think anyone pointed out that the trailer also involves another attack on earth, and large-scale destruction similar to the last two movies. So much for the frontier.

The Beastie Boys would be considered esoteric niche music that almost no one had ever heard of by then. Hell, they are barely sufferable now for most people. If they HAD to use anachronistic music, they could have used, say, the Stones or AC/DC or whatever.

As for the trailer, looks like a smashing action movie dusted with a handful of baubles designed to give it the appearance of having something to do with Star Trek. As expected. I'm not disappointed because my expectations were quite low. The only thing that really troubles me is the idea that they would make any more of these.

Understand, I'll see the movie and likely enjoy it - I enjoyed the last two. But I enjoyed them on the same level as I enjoyed F&F7...fun fluffy action movie. I haven't seen an actual STAR TREK movie in this century.

It is, however, a damned shame to see Qunito and Urban wasted

And since the Beastie Boys thing seems to be a point of contention, I suggest folks check there particular artist loyalties at the door. The point here is not whether or not you like the BB, or even whether you think someone will still be listening to them in 200+years. I don't think we have a good historical frame of reference because people behave differently in the age of mechanical/electronic recording than they did before that.
(for example, when I graduated high school almost 35 years ago, the first Elvis recordings (which was about as far back as anyone besides the 50+ crowd would go in their listening habits) was newer music that the current songs on the radio in the early 80's are now - and yet quite a bit of the music recorded in the 60's and 70's - the age equivilant of music recorded in the 30's from the perspective of 1980 - is still widely popular. The advent of rock music and easily accessible recordings changed the landscape and previous patterns don't apply)

That said, what is considered popular music changed radically in the 90's and there's little commonality between - say, the Stones - and the Beastie Boys so it would be damned hard to say what popular music will sound like in even 20 years, let alone 200. That said, I have trouble believing that the BB made any music that will endure as "classic"

And that has littles to do with how much I personally like them. Or don't.

As I already suggested, the Beastie Boys are probably not a significant element. Further, the extent to which they are is probably very referential to the audience, intended to provoke a certain response in us. Nobody should really think we have the first damn clue what form pop music will take 250 years from now.

Sure. I already said it isn't the anachronism of a Beastie Boys song that I object to; the producers have to use something and they can't very well invent future pop music. What bugs me is that it's a Beastie Boys song. Which means evoking Kirk-as-frat-boy, and, though I've never cared for that particular re-invention, I thought we'd moved past that in Into Darkness.

The artistic choice is indicative of character and that's not a direction I like for Kirk. I think we're ready for no-daddy-issues-all-grown-up Kirk.

From his reaction, I took it as Kirk reacting to a song he liked from his youth.

And it's possible (though unlikely, given that the Beastie Boys song is a callback to the first movie) that the song may only be in the trailer and not the movie. Kinda like this one:

Annoying the "fan boys" doesn't make a movie good.

IIRC "fan boys" almost en masse loathed Insurrection and Nemesis.

The only good thing about "Nemesis" is that I now use it to refer to large black cats that fight with my beloved Max.

Dude! That is still one of my favorite movies ever. Not because it's a great movie, or the acting, or the storyline. But because of the acting, the storyline, and NPH. How can you not love a movie that's so horrible it's great?
